Eboni Variable Tone

2018-07-04 by Myron Gochnauer

I finally installed Paul’s Eboni-VT inks in a 3880. As a start, I decided to go as generic as possible: Epson ABW driver/setting and Epson Enhanced Matte paper I still had from many years ago.

Wow! Very nice prints, with no special tweaking! Over the years I have generally avoided matte papers because after decades of printing on air-dried glossy paper in the darkroom, they just looked weak. But the few I have tried with this new setup look… well, they look rather elegant. And they ‘project’ well even in fading evening light.

QUESTION:
Does anyone have a suggestion for the least-disruptive way to keep Eboni-VT as my standard setup, but from time to time switch to something that will work well with glossy papers?

I’ve left PK in the PK location, and could ‘switch blacks' to access that cartridge. Any suggestions about other inks that would need changing for good quality on non-matte paper? (Using QTR would not be a barrier.)

If nothing else, I’m guessing that I could put LK and LLK in their OEM positions (now occupied by 18% and 6% MK (Eboni). I wonder whether the ABW would work with this. (Why not? It uses mostly PK, LK, LLK and the ‘yellow’ position, at least if you stay on the centre line of the advanced colour adjustment wheel.)

Eboni-VT that I’m using:

Y = Toner (13.75% Blue, 11.25% Cyan Canon Lucia pigments, 75% clear base.)
LM = 6% MK
M = 18% MK
LC = 9% MK
C = 30% MK
LK = 18% MK
LLK = 6% MK
K = 100% MK

Thanks!

Myron
