QTR Curve Creation Questions

2005-04-27 by donbga

Hello Everyone,

I'm attempting to create a new sepia tone curve for Red River Premium
Matte 76 lb and I have a few questions about the process. I'm using
an Epson 2200 with UC inks and the Windows XP version of QTR.

I've read the tutorial by Tom Moore (many times) and the tutorial by
Scott Graham (also many times).

Primarily using Tom's guide I have performed the following steps
which I think are correct:

1) Printed an initial Ink Seperation Test using the InkSeperation.psd
file using QTRgui. From which, after letting the inks dry, determined
the ink limitations for the MK and LK inks using a densitometer.

2)Next I edited a qidf file using the ink limit values determined in
step one. I also set the values of the various variables found in
other sepia toned qidf files found in the QTR Profiles\2200-UC folder.

3) I then created a curve from QTRgui with no linearization statement
in the qidf file.

4) I've now printed a 21 step wedge file. BTW, when I printed the
files I converted the embedded profile to Gray-Matte. There are two
files included with the QTR distribution and I've printed both. One
has small steps and is labeled 21 step grayscale linearization. The
second has a smooth gradient above the discrete steps. Which is the
correct one to use to linearize the curve?

I assume that I am now ready to linearize since the tone of the step
wedges look acceptable. However, I'm wondering if I need to set ink
limits for the toner inks?

From reading the tutorials I noticed this note from Tom:

"Finally, there is also a secondary flag for the UltraChrome inks
called UC_SEPIA=YES. With this flag the LK curve is also copied into
the Y yellow ink allowing you to add yellow to make a sepia tone."

I have found using this flag causes QTRgui to throw an error. Am I
missing something here.

I suppose I've asked enough questions for now, I do appreciate any
help anyone can offer.

Don Bryant

P.S. Just for the record here is the listing for the qidf file I have
created.
