QTR-Quadtone RIP

Hello Gang.  I'm very new to QTR but not to inkjet printing.

Recently acquired an Epson R1800, and so decided to
give QTR a try.  Owned many Epsons in the past, but
my last "new" Epson was an 1160, around 4 years ago.

Initial results are not very impressive.  Major complaints:
very grainy prints and nasty banding.  Unless I'm mistaken,
QTR's default with this printer is to use just K ink.

So, is QTR really going to be worth the effort using the
stock Ultrachrome inks?  I'd be interested in hearing
from anyone using QTR with stock inks on the R1800,
and recommendations for getting started -- without
wasting too much time, paper and ink.
