Crane Museo Silver Rag - Measurements

2006-03-03 by dj_joy_uk

I know a lot of you are as interested in this new paper as I am, given
all the hype surrounding it at the moment.

I went to the UK "Focus On Imaging" show on Sunday ( UK version of PMA
) and happened across a UK importer of this new paper. They haven't
got any yet ( apparently nobody has, it's not shipping quite yet ),
but the very nice lady on the stand let me have a few trial sheets of
8.5"x11" to play with. I've 4 sheets, two of which I will use to make
a QTR curve of sorts, and the other two to print images on to get a
feel for the media.

I'm fortunate enough to own a Gretag Macbeth Eye-One Spectro, so I've
started making up a curve for this new paper on my Epson 4000, and I
thought I'd share the spectro measurements. I'm not finished yet! I've
printed off the first 100% ink limit sheet and measured it, the data
from which is posted here. These densitometer readings are measured
relative to the paper white, rather than absolute white, which I'd
view as the best way to measure these. The measurements were very
consistent, and repeatable, probably the most reliable media I've yet
measured. Hopefully some of you will find these useful.

This suggests to me the ink blocks out at 60% on this media, so I've
printed the second calibration sheet with the ink limit set to 60%,
and that is drying as I type, and I'll share the results of that when
I get home tonight and measure it.

I'm quite impressed with the gamut of this paper, given it's
Matte(ish) nature, and I think a good range of B&W tones will be
available on this media.

I'm looking forward to printing an image on it.
