Crane Museo Silver Rag - Measurements

Crane Museo Silver Rag - Measurements

2006-03-03 by dj_joy_uk

I know a lot of you are as interested in this new paper as I am, given
all the hype surrounding it at the moment.

I went to the UK "Focus On Imaging" show on Sunday ( UK version of PMA
) and happened across a UK importer of this new paper. They haven't
got any yet ( apparently nobody has, it's not shipping quite yet ),
but the very nice lady on the stand let me have a few trial sheets of
8.5"x11" to play with. I've 4 sheets, two of which I will use to make
a QTR curve of sorts, and the other two to print images on to get a
feel for the media.

I'm fortunate enough to own a Gretag Macbeth Eye-One Spectro, so I've
started making up a curve for this new paper on my Epson 4000, and I
thought I'd share the spectro measurements. I'm not finished yet! I've
printed off the first 100% ink limit sheet and measured it, the data
from which is posted here. These densitometer readings are measured
relative to the paper white, rather than absolute white, which I'd
view as the best way to measure these. The measurements were very
consistent, and repeatable, probably the most reliable media I've yet
measured. Hopefully some of you will find these useful.

0 0.00
5 0.31
10 0.57
15 0.85
20 1.10
25 1.33
30 1.48
35 1.67
40 1.78
45 1.89
50 1.96
55 2.02
60 2.07
65 2.07
70 2.12
75 2.13
80 2.18
85 2.18
90 2.16
95 2.03
100 1.85

This suggests to me the ink blocks out at 60% on this media, so I've
printed the second calibration sheet with the ink limit set to 60%,
and that is drying as I type, and I'll share the results of that when
I get home tonight and measure it.

I'm quite impressed with the gamut of this paper, given it's
Matte(ish) nature, and I think a good range of B&W tones will be
available on this media.

I'm looking forward to printing an image on it.

I was a beta tester here in the states. I found the paper pretty
amazing. It can take a fairly heavy ink load. I actually found I had
the deepest blacks of any paper with Piezography inks. Unfortunately,
those inks don't work well with semi-gloss papers. Two days later, the
inks still smudged. I was going to reprint a portfolio using the
paper, but, alas, the test roll of 17" wide was defective. It was one
of their "junk" rolls, missing a coating, and wasn't suppose to be
sent out. So, like everyone else, I sit here waiting. . .

Nemo,
Do you think a spray fixative such as Printshield would solve the
smudging and potential gloss differential problems (if they exist)?
Thank you,
Nathan

Nathan,

I'm not sure a spray fixative would do the trick or not. Part of the
"problem" is that Piezography inks just don't sink into the substrate
of glossy-type papers. Since the inks are just "sitting there", I'm
not sure a spray would fix that, and instead, might actually
exacerbate the problem. I tried sprays years ago for other prints and
never really cared for them, but someone else might have a different
take on it.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Crane Museo Silver Rag - Measurements

2006-03-07 by Edward Wiseman

If I may interject..

I'm not using Piezography B&W inks, but MIS UT-2, and while BETA testing the
the CRANE SILVER RAG, there is NO problem with the ink penetrating the
paper, however there is some gloss differential, easily "leveled" with 2
very light coats of PREMIER ART SHIELD..
The results have been outstanding, IMHO, and better than anything I was ever
able to do in my "WET" darkroom..

Just my 2 cents..
