On thinking a bit further, I guess I did not use the QTR rip but the Epson - sorry. Joachim

  Joachim,
When you used this profile, did you print through the QTR rip?

Thank you for your helpful critique. Nonetheless, confusion still reigns at my computer after almost 40 years of darkroom B/W printing. I obtained the HANptorag printer profile from Inkjetmall in Vermont, installed it, used the Epson 2200 and under paper type picked Enhanced matte. It's my first dry B/W and the result was (not spectacular) surprisingly good. Did I accidentally do something right? I certainly appreciate your generous gift of your time. Joachim

    Ifotogu and Joachim

The profiles from Inkjet Mall in Vermont (which is what I think you are referencing) are not for use with QTR. They are used for regular colour printing. They should be installed in the regular Windows or Mac folder for ICC printer profiles. The files used for B&W printing with QTR are more correctly called Curves. Although they perform a similar function to ICC profiles (like those from Inkjet Mall), they are quite different in their details and not interchangeable.

Unfortunately, many people (myself included) refer to Curves as profiles (which they are in a general sense, but just not ICC Profiles). That leads to some confusion.

There are no Curves for HPR and UC ink in the current QTR distribution (that I can find). Most HPR users seem to use one of the B&W specialty inks.

If you have tried the Epson Enhanced Matte Curve and are not happy with that, you could try using that Curve again (with Matte ink) and adjusting the Gamma or Shadow settings. Gamma changes have a dramatic effect so only small changes will be required. You will have to experiment. Shadow is not so sensitive. In both cases larger numbers mean lighter prints, if I recall correctly.

A more complex approach would be to create an ICC profile for the profile you decide to use using the QTR_Create_ICC utility that comes with QTR. That requires a densitometer or scanner. Paul Roark has a web page describing how to do this with a flatbed scanner. It’s here:
                            http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/Making_B-W_ICCs.htm

Finally, of course, you could create a curve yourself and then share it with the community.

    Thanks for the info...
How does it work? I guess you just install this with the other profiles in the QTR? -- Robert

      Thanks for your response.

I am using the Epson 2200. I checked last night, and I still could not find the profiles for the Hahnemuhle papers.

      Robert and Steve,

Not all papers are profiled for all printers or inks. I'm betting
Steve is using something common, like a 2200, where dang near every
      paper out there is profiled.

Robert, what printer are you using?
