Hahnemuhle profiles

2006-05-08 by scribedc

I am trying to print on Hahnemuhle with the Quadtone RIP. I am getting
very dark results.

There does not appear to be a specific profile for the paper. I was
wondering what others are using for the profile.

I have tried with Entrada and Epson profiles. Other suggestions?

the h profiles should be there... they are in mine!

Robert and Steve,

Not all papers are profiled for all printers or inks. I'm betting
Steve is using something common, like a 2200, where dang near every
paper out there is profiled.

Robert, what printer are you using?

Profiles that you get from other sources are most likely color ICC
profiles for
the Epson driver unless they are explicitly labeled as either QTR ICC
profiles
made with the QTR-Create-ICC utility or as the QTR curves/profiles for
the
QTR driver. These curves/profiles are what you would most like want.
You can usually tell by the extension -- .icc or icm is for ICC
profiles,
.quad, .qidf or .txt is for QTR curves/profiles.

There aren't any H Photo Rag curves in the QTR download. I would think
you'd
do pretty well with the Entrada or Premier Fine Art profiles. You must
use some
curve otherwise the output will be very dark.

RE: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Hahnemuhle profiles

2006-05-09 by Tom Moore

Ifotogu and Joachim

The profiles from Inkjet Mall in Vermont (which is what I think you are
referencing) are not for use with QTR. They are used for regular colour
printing. They should be installed in the regular Windows or Mac folder for
ICC printer profiles. The files used for B&W printing with QTR are more
correctly called Curves. Although they perform a similar function to ICC
profiles (like those from Inkjet Mall), they are quite different in their
details and not interchangeable.

Unfortunately, many people (myself included) refer to Curves as profiles
(which they are in a general sense, but just not ICC Profiles). That leads
to some confusion.

There are no Curves for HPR and UC ink in the current QTR distribution (that
I can find). Most HPR users seem to use one of the B&W specialty inks.

If you have tried the Epson Enhanced Matte Curve and are not happy with
that, you could try using that Curve again (with Matte ink) and adjusting
the Gamma or Shadow settings. Gamma changes have a dramatic effect so only
small changes will be required. You will have to experiment. Shadow is not
so sensitive. In both cases larger numbers mean lighter prints, if I recall
correctly.

A more complex approach would be to create an ICC profile for the profile
you decide to use using the QTR_Create_ICC utility that comes with QTR. That
requires a densitometer or scanner. Paul Roark has a web page describing how
to do this with a flatbed scanner. It's here:

                        http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/Making_B-W_ICCs.htm

Finally, of course, you could create a curve yourself and then share it with
the community.

RE: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Hahnemuhle profiles

2006-05-09 by joachim oppenheimer

Thank you for turning my head straight - it's now 1/2-way there. I have just made my first print on Hanhemule photorag paper. It turned out surprisingly well compared to my darkroom B/W printing. I used the Epson 2200 and the Inkjetmall (Vermont) curve/profile (I still don't understand the difference) and I obtained a quite decent black and a very fine tonal scale on the portrait of a writer that I had done 18 years ago conventionally using Agfa chloro/brom paper (May it rest in peace). . Thanks in good measure to you, I'm learning. Joachim

do pretty well with the Entrada or Premier Fine Art profiles. You must
use some
curve otherwise the output will be very dark.

RE: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Hahnemuhle profiles

2006-05-09 by joachim oppenheimer

Thank you for your helpful critique. Nonetheless, confusion still reigns at
my computer after almost 40 years of darkroom B/W printing. I obtained the
HANptorag printer profile from Inkjetmall in Vermont, installed it, used the
Epson 2200 and under paper type picked Enhanced matte. It's my first dry
B/W and the result was (not spectacular) surprisingly good. Did I
accidentally do something right? I certainly appreciate your generous gift
of your time. Joachim

There are no Curves for HPR and UC ink in the current QTR distribution
(that I can find).

Finally, of course, you could create a curve yourself and then share it
with the community.

I had the profile entered in the 2200 - EP2200EPptoBK_HANptoRag - in the printer profile. Under paper type, I selected I selected enhanced matte Paper as this was the closest I saw to the matte I wanted. I am not sure that what I did was on firm ground - any thoughts? Joachim

      Thanks for your response.

I am using the Epson 2200. I checked last night, and I still could not find the profiles for the Hahnemuhle papers.

      Robert and Steve,

Not all papers are profiled for all printers or inks. I'm betting
Steve is using something common, like a 2200, where dang near every
      paper out there is profiled.

Robert, what printer are you using?
