At least in the Epson driver, media type affects a ton of things, including ink volume. It is possible to puddle ink on the paper by making the wrong choices (I did it once long ago). and I would think that gloss might take less ink? less absorbant? just guessing. Anyway, I once heard that ink volume is highest at one end of the media type pull down list and continuously decrease down (or up) the pull down list. Don't know if it is true or not, or which direction it runs in.
