paper settings and ink volume

paper settings and ink volume

2006-05-29 by Olivier

Does anyone know whether the paper settings (Premium gloss, photo
quality...) affects sprayed ink volume, or if it doesn't matter.
Thanks.

I have a feeling that paper setting does affect ink volume. Certainly
plain paper needs less ink than gloss paper, but I would like to see a
list of paper types versus ink volume.

That might sound a bit useless as a question since you can limit ink
per channel so ink load per paper setting comes irrelevant. But if it
changes you could then possibly set total ink limit to limit K and
find grey ink limits that maximise other lighter Ks and chasing best
linearization.
Hope to really get a reply on this.

At least in the Epson driver, media type affects a ton of things,
including ink volume. It is possible to puddle ink on the paper by
making the wrong choices (I did it once long ago).

and I would think that gloss might take less ink? less absorbant?
just guessing. Anyway, I once heard that ink volume is highest at one
end of the media type pull down list and continuously decrease down
(or up) the pull down list. Don't know if it is true or not, or which
direction it runs in.

Yes, for the Epson driver it's quite clear. Where it is not is for QTR
that uses the Gimp print engine. I don't know if ink load is embedded
depending on paper choice in the drop-down box.

I'm new to QTR and I'm still trying it out (haven't paid yet) so I'm
just guessing, as well. I'm supposing that the media type pull-down
list must do something, otherwise it wouldn't be there and everything
would then be done using ink limits and linearised curves. I've been
trying to develop curves for Portrico Premium Gloss paper and (at the
moment) black-only printing with MIS ink on an Epson 1280.

Olivier. Look at message #51245 on the B&W printing group. Roy
Harrington gave an answer to your question there some time ago. I
havn't seen anything more on it since that time.

Very valuable answer, thanks. So it seems there's no other effect than
just mechanical settings...for v2.1.
I'll try to dig on the Gimp print forum, though I'm lost there most of
the time.
