QTR-Quadtone RIP

A few weeks back, I too had more than my share of hassles in trying to get
back into a B&W mode. Ultimately, it learned to the fact that the ink in my
printer had apparently evaporated (or something) as most of my cartridges
had emptied in sitting as I had scarcely used them initially. This led to a
need to reload each cartridge with the Mediastreet Quad Inks. This led to
Epson's drivers refusing to recognize the cartridges as Epson.which they
were not. This then led to needing to replace the chip on the front of the
cartridge. Then I updated the QTR and finally located a curve set that
worked well after some tweaking, all of which led to a week of intensive
printing that led to some incredible (thanks to QTR) work in preparation for
a showing. Now, I have used some of these in developing a new site
artphotobooks.com to serve as the home for my art images. Now to begin the
process of populating the site while preparing for new shows. That all said,
is the new Canon now the leader in integrated B&W/color in one printer for
mid-sized work or is it still the consensus to use a separate printer for
B&W. Assuming a separate B&W then, what is the preferred next step up in
terms of a format and inking system beyond 13X19 in the mid sized range?

Great news, I too had a successful weekend with my first attempts with QTR -
the results were way way better than with the Epson driver. So many thanks
to Daniel Staver and Tom Moore. I am in tweaking mode now and have got into
avc files but I am at the moment puzzled by the curves that you can see by
right clicking on a profile. What do they tell you and what shape should a
good one have? I think the Y axis is the ink density limit and the X axis
print tonal range?

I was pulling my hair out trying to get a neutral B&W print on an
Epson 2200 so I downloaded QTR and taught myself how to use it by
flipping through about 3000 archived messages.

My first QTR attempt was a portrait that I entered in a local juried
competition and it won a ribbon. 

Thanks to everyone who contributed to those 3000 messages.
