Jim, It sounds all correct. Ideas I have: Bad paper, printing on back of paper, incorrect ICC profile selected in Print with Preview or printing softproof. Using Calib mode for real prints. Try a new paper and check all the settings, twice. Maybe you have a Preset that's been corrupted.
