new problem with 2.5.0

new problem with 2.5.0

2007-03-31 by joffbroadway

I have been using K6 on my Epson 7500 with OSX 10.4.9
successfully for about 15 months. Now, with QTR 2.5.0,
it looks like all my tones from 55 to about 90 percent
are the same--that posteriorized look. It looks like
all my carts have been switched around by some evil
demon.

If, just for the sake of argument, we assume I am not
an idiot and know how to profile and set things up in
"print with preview" and in the QRT interface, could
the RIP itself have changed in such a way as to demand
a different line-up of carts? I will answer all
follow up questions in detail regarding my set up and
settings, I just want to know now if anyone is having
the same problem now or knows if the cart positions
have changed in the RIP itself. thanks.

I assume you have done the usual checks on the printer, nozzle, shake
carts, alignment, etc..? Did this instantly happen when you changed
the software?

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] new problem with 2.5.0

Mark,

The nozzle check is perfect. There is no banding or
skips in the nozzle check or in the prints. The
alignment is on.

The problem happened a few updates ago. I amy try to
install an oder version, if I can find one and see
what happens.

FYI, and to prevent fruther wrong tracks, I am
printing a grayscale 8 bit TIFF. I have tried using my
old "print with preview" settings letting photoshop
determine colors and printer profile= QRT-matte paper
and perceptual and also tried the newer recommendation
of letting printer detrermine colors and perceptual.
No difference.

In QRT I am using the correct curve for Innova soft
and the corrct side of the paper. I have tried
selecting all three curves at once for Innova as well.
And in printer features, I have chosen matte paper.I
have selected and also unselected split tone curve
blending with no change at all.

So far, nothing I do produces any change in the image
at all.

Mark,

I just re-installed 2.3.4 version, and the prints are
the same. I took all the other versions off with QTR
remove software and removed all 7500 printers from my
list in system preferences. No go.

Jim,

Nothing has changed for the 7500 and the K6 profiles since they first
came out.
If the inks are all firing then I'd assume it's the wrong inks. Did
you put new
carts in awhile ago? It takes many prints for new ink to show.

Print out the inkseparation.tif file in Calibration Mode and see the
density of the
inks and whether they are correct.

I have not changed inks.

I printed out the Pattern Page. I used no color
management, Calibration mode, no curves selected,
60/40 blend and all other stuff in 0 or default. On
Innova Soft Texture, I printed it out.

I have 6 step wedges and one blank for light black.
What am I supposed to do now?

Well you should see 6 distinctly different densities:
Ink carts are labeled #1,2,3,4,5,6 darkest to lightest.
They should be in K, C, LC, Y, M, LM order darkest to lightest.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] new problem with 2.5.0, addn reply

2007-03-31 by Jim

Roy,

My carts are from Dec of 05 and have only very
mysterious labels on them that took a lot of work with
IJM to figure out. Slot 1 is K and is cart 1, slot 2
is C and is cart 2, slot 3 is M and it is cart 5, slot
4 is LC and it is cart 3, slot 5 is LM and it is cart
6, and finaly slot 6 is Y and it is cart 4. The
positions have not changed since I made some wonderful
prints.

On the pattern page printout, k is darkest followed by
c,lc,y,m and lm--just like you said.

My prints have almost no contrast at all and have a
very poor D-max and appear almost posteriorized.

I have tried new and old files using 2.5 and 2.3 and
HPR and Inova Soft and both sides of the paper and
gamma 2.2 and 1.8 and having both the printer and
photoshop contol color and QTR matte paper setting and
gamma 2.2.

There is something really wrong. I have been a pro for
43 years and all digital for 6 and using some type of
IJM ink in three different printers for 5 years. If
this is user error, I will actually be happy!

Now where do I go?

Jim

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] new problem with 2.5.0, addn reply

2007-03-31 by Roy Harrington

Jim,

It sounds all correct.

Ideas I have:
Bad paper, printing on back of paper, incorrect ICC profile selected
in Print with Preview or printing softproof. Using Calib mode for real prints.

Try a new paper and check all the settings, twice. Maybe you have a Preset
that's been corrupted.

Re: new problem with 2.5.0, addn reply

2007-03-31 by john dean

Personally I would try the following, if you are absolutely sure your
nozzle checks are 100% (critical), and you have gently shaken the
carts very well (also important), let them sit overnight and then
printed out a purge target to move some of that ink out of the lines
and move new ink into the heads. It sounds suspiciously to me like
ink pigments seperating. This is however uncommon with my experience
with K6 so far. But then I do shake my carts about once every 2 weeks
as a precaution with all my printers.

At that point or even before doing that I would take a greyscale and
print it out of the standard Epson driver while assigning rgb space
to that file. In other words by pass QTR all together and print out
the grey inks as if they Epson driver thinks it is rgb ink, you could
use any color matte profile. Then look to see if you still see this
same posterization. If so it most likely has nothing to do with QTR .
Then you can start really dealing with the inks themselves. Like I
said before I'm using the same set up as you with 100% perfect
results. Like you mentioned, the fist batch we had was mislabeled and
I sent them back (last year).

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: new problem with 2.5.0, addn reply

2007-04-03 by Jim

John and Josh,

Shaking the carts has made a huge difference and then
printing out some very large prints to clear the lines
of the weak ink.

Things are not perfect yet, I think beause the lines
are not totally cleaned of the weak ink, but I
definately am on the right track now. It is not
software or hardware or user error but GRAVITY that
has been screwing with me.

thanks everyone for you help and thoughts. I could
not have done this myself.

Jim
