QTR-Quadtone RIP

I have thought about those two options but here's the thing:
I thought that the soft-proofing was a means to show what the final print WILL look like, so that we can make any necessary adjustments beforehand. My images are converted to the QTR grayscale profiles, but here's the thing: It doesn't matter which profile I convert to in a visual sense (I accept that there may be an issue here over the actual gray values used in the conversion) - I still have these 'compressed' deep blacks (greys). The profile shows this. Toggling the profile view switches between the 'true' respresentation of the file print space - and the richer non-altered deep blacks. I can convert to either of the grayscale profiles - both gloss paper and matte - which seems to allow for greater Dmax - and both of them show this 'compression'. If I edit the image with a curve adjustment layer to increase gray values, this edited image is still 'restricted' by viewing through the soft proof setup.
As I mentioned in my post, if I use photoshop curves and just print through the print preview pane, I get much richer blacks. I can use the standard gray gamma 2.2 soft proof or none at all - but the results, while not as mangeable in a workflow sense as using QTR, are significantly better. What I'm trying to discover through this post is both  why this difference exists and how to make sure that using the QTR gray profiles allows me to print the full range of gray values. If I select a neutral toned image in QTR - these curves don't even use the black ink. If I simply make some nice dark blacks on my monitor and print with photoshop curves - I don't have any control over how the conversion is done and my printer may well use the black ink, but the resulting image is much richer.
It may just be some overlook during setup or I may be misunderstanding how to use QTR - either way this difference in output is confusing.

You have two options:
1. Set up your softproof as you describe, then make a further edit to
the image to adjust the shadows and contrast to your liking (possibly
using a curve adjustment layer, for example) and then print the image.
2 Convert your image working space to QTR-Gray-Photo-Paper and then
print the image.
