Soft Proofing QTR in Photoshop

Soft Proofing QTR in Photoshop

2007-04-16 by alan9990_6

Hi all,

I'm hoping that someone can provide an explanation of the following -
I accept that it may simply be something in my set up.

I have an Epson 1290 with UT2 inks installed. As such I'm happy with
the profiles that ship with QTR - I can fiddle later, for now I want
to thoroughly test the whole workflow and calibration set up.

To that end, I've printed several black and white A4s using both cool
and neutral curves for Epson Lustre Paper. No problem.

Having read most of the documentation I can find for QTR, I have
installed Roy's ICC gray profiles and find that when soft proofing in
photoshop I can get a really close match to the print (this might be a
bit back to front, I agree) if I set the proofing view to use the
profile for QTR-Gray Photo Paper and then set 'Preserve numbers' and
'simulate black ink'.

This setup correctly displays the way in which the print (and the now
altered screen image) seem to lose the real deep blacks. If I switch
the proofing off, more black tones are visible.

This isn't a problem insofar as what I can see on my monitor is pretty
close to the output from the RIP. However, if I print the same image
through Photoshop using the Paul Roark curves (which loses my soft
proofing), these same images contain these deep black tones which
appear to be lost in QTR.

I understand that matt papers have greater Dmax yes, but this is about
printing the same image on the same pearl (lustre) paper - with the
non RIP version producing better results. However, I'm both convinced
that QTR will give me the same if not better output than the curves,
plus I'd really like to keep my soft proofing capability.

Can anyone suggest where I might be going wrong?

You have two options:

1. Set up your softproof as you describe, then make a further edit to
the image to adjust the shadows and contrast to your liking (possibly
using a curve adjustment layer, for example) and then print the image.

2 Convert your image working space to QTR-Gray-Photo-Paper and then
print the image.

Thanks, Tom
I have thought about those two options but here's the thing:
I thought that the soft-proofing was a means to show what the final print WILL look like, so that we can make any necessary adjustments beforehand. My images are converted to the QTR grayscale profiles, but here's the thing: It doesn't matter which profile I convert to in a visual sense (I accept that there may be an issue here over the actual gray values used in the conversion) - I still have these 'compressed' deep blacks (greys). The profile shows this. Toggling the profile view switches between the 'true' respresentation of the file print space - and the richer non-altered deep blacks. I can convert to either of the grayscale profiles - both gloss paper and matte - which seems to allow for greater Dmax - and both of them show this 'compression'. If I edit the image with a curve adjustment layer to increase gray values, this edited image is still 'restricted' by viewing through the soft proof setup.
As I mentioned in my post, if I use photoshop curves and just print through the print preview pane, I get much richer blacks. I can use the standard gray gamma 2.2 soft proof or none at all - but the results, while not as mangeable in a workflow sense as using QTR, are significantly better. What I'm trying to discover through this post is both why this difference exists and how to make sure that using the QTR gray profiles allows me to print the full range of gray values. If I select a neutral toned image in QTR - these curves don't even use the black ink. If I simply make some nice dark blacks on my monitor and print with photoshop curves - I don't have any control over how the conversion is done and my printer may well use the black ink, but the resulting image is much richer.
It may just be some overlook during setup or I may be misunderstanding how to use QTR - either way this difference in output is confusing.

Re: Soft Proofing QTR in Photoshop

2007-04-17 by dlruckus

Hi Alan.
Try unchecking preserve color #s and go from there. Also look back a
few weeks in archives here for Roy's post regarding the different uses
of softproofing. I think it may help you with your problem.
Also, what do you get if you simply convert the 21 step grayscale to
Qtrmatt.icc or photo and print it? You should get a nice black. If you
don't, it might mean your curves aren't correct.

Regards
Duane

RE: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Soft Proofing QTR in Photoshop

2007-04-19 by Tom Moore

Alan

Just to confirm the details

1. you have an image that prints the way you like using the Epson driver
using Paul Roark's curves.
2. With that image you have used the Photoshop Convert to Profile (i.e not
the Assign Profile) menu to convert it to the QTR-Matte-Paper profile
4. you actually printed the image on matte paper
3. the blacks are still muddy when compared to the print with Paul's curves?

Sorry to be so pedantic in my response. Your last reply was involved and
seemed to leave the potential for confusion on my part.

RE: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Soft Proofing QTR in Photoshop

2007-04-19 by Alan Ansell

Hi Tom, thank you for your input. I was kindly referred to some earlier posts that covered some of this topic. I have gone back and read some of those also. That has helped to clarify a little more, but it would seem that I might (as someone has put it) be tyring to compare apples and oranges.

To improve my understanding further and to answer your specific, and not at all pedantic, questions (clarity around all this seems to be a skill in its own right!):
1. I am currently just comparing images between a) Photoshop with curves and b) QTR alone - to familiarise myself with the processes and to check my proofing and setup. I should say here that this comparison involves two different ink sets.
The Roark curves process is to use Photoshop to edit and convert to black and white and then add a curve adjustment layer to the image (one of his which he provides on his site) and then send to the Epson driver. The Epson driver has no adjustments made (that appears to be yet another workflow option) to it other than correct media setting and ICM disabled. The addition of one of these curves (themselves labelled 'cool' 'neutral' 'carbon' etc seem analogous to the curve names/styles in QTR
2. With this image - in the above workflow - I have not converted to QTR grayscale. I have merely produced a black and white image that I like and according to Paul Roark's directions, the image is eft it in RGB space. I'll likely use a channel mixer approach for this. Adding his adjustment curves displays a strangely coloured image which it is impossible to soft-proof. This image workflow is output to a colour ink set with only one black but which printer has been calibrated with an extended grey patch set. So while I like the result, this workflow is impossible to soft-proof.
4. I printed the images on pearl paper - I only have MIS Photo black in the B&W printer.
3.The blacks that would be considered 'squashed' or 'flattened' are those produced in a different workflow from above, which involves taking the same edited image above and this time converting to (in this case) QTR gloss paper profile and printing through QTR. Now I realised when I did this that it seems that matte papers can hold more black ink and therefore are considered to produce deeper blacks. But that wasn't actually at the heart of my post. I have converted to the QTR matte profile but although I didn't print it, I couldn't see a very great increase in depth.
What I was commenting on is that using Epson media and MIS inks in the QTR printer, I was happy to accept the supplied curves as accurate enough for the time being. The soft-proofing setup that seemed to best describe the printed output was to use the QTR gray Lab profile but to enable switches for Preserve numbers and Simulate Black Ink. And I don't know why that is.
In light of these two workflows, several things arose which I'll re-state here, hopefully a little more clearly:
5. QTR is widely commented on as being a very good tool for black and white printing. That's why I bought and installed it. Of course there is a fairly steep learning curve involved and as such, the difference in above outputs is most likely down to something I've overlooked or misunderstood.
6. In comparing the two workflows, the first one with the Roark curves, meant that I simply 'hoped' that the printed output would be what I wanted - there is no preview avialable. The print was in the same neutral tones as the QTR ouput (also using a neutral curve). But the deep blacks on this Roark print had noticeably richer tones without any intervention on my part and due, presumably, to the way the curves bias the image data to compensate the Epson driver. The QTR print on the other hand, matched almost exactly what I saw on my monitor - the monitor too shows these flattened deep black areas.
7. I can think about applying an adjustment curve in this second, QTR based workflow to adjust the levels. But when applying the soft-proof profile, the same relative flattening occurs. My preference in all of this is to correctly set up and use QTR since it is repeatable and what I'd call fully managed. So why does it seem that using QTR curves and workflow produces accurate prints but which appear 'muted' in comparison to the other workflow?
8. If I'm not going to confuse matters further the following relates to the above: I've since set about profiling some other paper I have here - which are medium cost Pearl and Gloss papers. Yes, I reaslise that this might seem perverse to those of you familiar with high quality media and prints, but I am currently aiming to fully understand the principles involved. To do so I don't think I have to burn through £25 boxes of paper (please correct me on that one if necessary). I will be purchasing more ink and decent matte papers once I am satisfied. Anyway, I started with a aupplied QTR curve set and stripped out the linearisaton data and began the ink limit tests etc. I printed a 21 step gray patch. I linearised the curve data and measuring the reprinted gray patch produces an almost perfectly flat linearisation graph. So I'm getting to grips with all this. But - as this relates to all the above - I notice that typical neutral curve sets for non matte papers typically don't use
the black ink. The L value of the black on this second, calibrated grey patch was 9.2 - hardly very black.
So clearly the proofing methods are working but what I'm looking for is the type of output from QTR that matches the deep blacks produced in workflow one above. If that means writing a new curve set then I'm all ears.

I had described the procedure for matte papers, but the photo paper is
analagous. It seems that, buried deep in your lengthy reply, you are
doing what I would do when printing with QTR, i.e. converting your
image colour space using the ICC profile for your curve (in your case
the generic profile QTR-Gray-Photo) before saving the TIFF for printing.

The process works for me. I do see a small change on the screen
sometimes when I do the conversion. I think that's natural when you
consider that ink/paper would not have the dynamic range of a monitor.
However, you should be able to get as good blacks with QTR as you have
with Paul's curves and the Epson driver. If you're not (with the same
ink/paper/printer), then something is wrong. Possibly the QTR curve
you are using is the culprit.

On another note, although I haven't used UT2, I have used UT7, which
is a similar inkset design. I don't think the K is used when printing
on photo paper. I can see that's true (by looking at the qidf) for
QTR. I am almost certain that it's true for Paul's curves as well.

Tom

Tom,

Could you please just clarify part of your first paragraph below - "converting your image colour space using the ICC profile for your curve..."?

I appreciate the help that you and others have given me, but to be honest - and without wishing to sound at all ungrateful - all this is starting to give me brain fade.

So, to try to clarify at least something and establish a starting point for myself, put in simple terms:
If I make a print using QTR and that my monitor accurately enough shows how that print will look, yet I don't happen to think that the blacks are 'right' - then should I simply forget using the curves that ship with QTR and make some of my own? Since we can agree that neutral curves don't use any black ink, does that mean that I need to accept that printing with a neutral curve set limits the blacks?

Does it make sense to you for me to create a new curve set - call it whatever - and add the black ink and then go about linearising etc? Otherwise, I am starting to feel a bit bewildered by all these seemingly continually conflicting methods and workarounds.

Is there anothere post, or some documentation on a website or within the software that I may have not yet read that will explain in clear steps how to go about the matte paper procedure you say you have described?

QTR. I am almost certain that it's true for Paul's curves as well.

In QTR once you've created a curve and linearized it you can print the
step wedge one more time and use the measure values to create an ICC
profile for the curve (or blend of curves) using the QTR-Create-ICC
utility. You can then use that ICC profile to softproof images you
plan to print with that curve (or blend) or use it for printing as we
have discussed. These ICC profiles are simply specifically tailored
versions of QTR-Gray-Matte (or other generic) profiles.

I'm not sure what curve you're using. Curves are specific to a
particular printer/paper/ink combination. Sometimes you can use a
curve for a different paper but you may have to make adjustments to
the shadows or gamma, or re-linearize.

Since we can agree that neutral curves don't use any black ink, does

I don't agree. For UT7 (and, I presume UT2) K is not usually used for
photo (non-matte) papers since it is usually Eboni which is a matte
ink. Even without using K, the dmax of photo papers is usually higher
than that of matte papers.

that mean that I need to accept that printing with a neutral curve set
limits the blacks?

If you really want to use a K ink for a Photo paper use MIS PKN, not
Eboni.

Otherwise, I am starting to feel a bit bewildered by all these
seemingly continually conflicting methods and workarounds.

If you're not already, you could join the DigitalBlackandWhitethePrint
yahoo mail list. Also, one of the members of that list has just
written a book on the subject. That might be interesting.

OS X Leopard

Hello All,

Anyone having luck using QTR on 10.5?

It seems to hang for me. I did a clean 10.5 install & then added the
2.5.2 QTR. The printer went in OK< but print job hangs.

Anyone? Will there be an update soon?

Thanks,

Skip Sorrentino

I ran the Leopard patch from the downloads page at quadtonerip.com
and then reinstalled my curves. Everything is working just fine.

I'm using a 7600.
