The protection counter is a safety mechanism for the ink waste pads. When the message appears that you have to change hardware, the wastepads are full of ink an they have to be changed by epson service. But I just read your postings once more: you told that you have printed about 20 pics. So the wastepads can't be full with old ink already. Which error messages did you get from the printer driver? You might reset the chips of the cartridges via ssc-utility. Perhaps this will help.
