I had similar problem with The r1800 and cx3200.
Epson have this annoying habit of putting a counter linked to a software switch which switches the printer off when "Epson" decide you should change the waste ink pads. They can normally be washed out with warm water, dried and put back but you will need a software program to reset the counter to zero. You will not get this from Epson but if you go on line and Google about some you will find what you need. To avoid having the agro of washing out the pads in the future you can route the pipes out to a plastic container and just empty this when it fills up. You will still have to reset the counter when it reaches maximum again.I found Epson themselves very unhelpful in this matter.
good luck
Robin
