Tom..I am useing the original printer software. My experiences have shown that after the cartridge is installed but before the completion of the replacement process, you then go to the printer icon and proceed as discribed. This has always worked fo me. Without doing the software process first, I would lose a whole cartridge of ink due to continued cleaning of the black ink. I hope this was helpful.
