Small chips, big mystery (Epson 2200)

Small chips, big mystery (Epson 2200)

2008-01-14 by karlla_fed

I've been pulling my jair out for a few days trying to get a good
print out of my "new" Epson 2200. I tried several method of
printing, including QTR for BW, and Epson's ICC's. All my printing
has been on EEM with Eboni Black (matte) ink.

Today I realized that the empty cartridges I had purchased to fill
with MIS (inksupply.com) inks showed up in the Epson driver utility
as having black set to PHOTO black. If all the prints I had made
were made by a printer that "though" it had Photo black instead of
Matte black, that would explain the less than stellar results.

My question is: how do I get my printer to understand it has Matte
ink loaded and not Photo black? Is it the chip on the refillable cart
that is marked photo black, or is it a software setting? The empty
cartridge kit I received only had 7 cartridges, which I believe is
standard for empties on this printer, so how does everybody else
swithch from Matte to Photo black on the 2200?

This can be frustrating, I know.
Right click 2200 printer icon (Bottom Bar), right click printer
settings, left click maintenance tab, left click printer and options
box (Bottom), put curser over black ink choice, then click okay.
Highlighted choice is what is in the printer. You are good to go

The chip determines whether it's matte or photo black. If you have an old matte black cart you can exchange chips and you'll be good to go, provided you have a chip resetter. If you are using auto reset chips then you'll have to get the correct one from MIS. I'm sure they have matte black chips also in case you don't have any laying around.

That worked perfectly! Thanks so much for the valuable insight and
saving me from messing with the hardware!

Hmmm! When I try it, the Epson software won't let me select the other ink.
The matte cart is installed, highlighted in the panel and I can't highlight
the PK entry. I'm using Version 5.50 of the software. What version are you
using?

Tom..I am useing the original printer software. My experiences have
shown that after the cartridge is installed but before the completion
of the replacement process, you then go to the printer icon and
proceed as discribed. This has always worked fo me. Without doing
the software process first, I would lose a whole cartridge of ink due
to continued cleaning of the black ink. I hope this was helpful.
