I also use a Spyder for reading the step scales and have found there is a straight forward 
approach that builds a text file that can be drop onto the create applett.

When Spyder Print 3 is at the opening screen, the TOOLS menu has a calibrate option 
avialable, clicking on that and calibrating the spectrometer then activates the "Measure" 
option, clicking on that opens a window that permits reading the target. Then it saves to a  
text file that can be dropped on the applett.
