First of all: were the data you were putting actually steadily increasing? If not, either your ink setup or your readings are not correct. You should fix that first then. If you readings are steadily increasing, you still may get that error message if the increments are rather small. This happens on a regular basis with 51 step wedges. But you're using the 21 step wedge, which is the way to go. So my assumption would be that your ink setup/gray curve parameters are not good enough in the first place. One should have a somewhat linear L curve prior to the linearization. Linearization can't fix errors in the ink setup/cray curve parameters. Tom Moore's user guide should be of help here.
