The mostly likely reason is that the .acv is not a grayscale curve. In other words it probably is an RGB version that has multiple curves -- a grayscale .acv has just one. The difficulty is that you can't tell easily. It's determined by the type of file you had open in Photoshop when you last Saved the .acv file. PS is very silent about all this. So make sure you have a grayscale file open when you edit .acv files.
