QTR-Quadtone RIP

You said that you want to print black only because you are not getting neutral greys using the colour inks. This is not at all unusual when you are using such an indirect printing process. Have you tried a custom profile for your (colour) process? I know from experience that this has solved the problem for some people using transfer printing methods.

I'm not suggesting that QTR is not great for B&W - I have used it for the past four years with my own curves - but given that QTR does not directly support the R1900, a good colour profile may be an easier route for you.
