You could not pick more different printers. 3880 is pigment based ink, 1400 is dye based. In theory the print life is similar. Prints will look different because of the different ink base. That said, the 3880 is cheaper to print with because of the larger ink cartridges. Cost per ml is likely around 1/2 depending on what estimate you believe of the ink in the 1400 cartridges. (10-13ml) The 3880 has a more robust paper handling mechanism, which also moves the paper more precisely. This is important in a ink just printer where placing the dots accurately is what it's all about. The 3880 head can produce 3 different dot sizes allowing for a much more sophisticated dither pattern. The 3880 is quite a bit bigger and will need more room both in front and behind. Do not underestimate the difference in impact between a print on 13x19 paper and 17x22 paper. It is substantial once you put a print on the wall.
