Flatbed scanners can be used, but the spectros are a major advantage if you do much of this. I use the DataColor Spyder 3 Print. I'm not sure what all the pros and cons of the competitors are. I do like the ability to print 21-step test strips, with the gradients above the patches so I can see the ramp, and have them fit as a single strip across a letter size piece of paper. Even though the DataColor unit does now have strip reading, I do it manually -- takes all of one minute.
