Would a product like Colormunki help in the development of curves for custom ink sets and papers? [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Yes it does work. You can easily export to excel for plotting etc. It may not be as straight forward as some of the more expensive options but it does work. Paul _____

well, you can easily export if you are operating on a Mac. Its harder on a PC as the ColorMunki doesn't export a .csv file on the PC. It's a liitle tedious manually copying the measured values, but can be done. On 03/04/2011 22:03, Paul Grant wrote: > > Yes it does work. there is another option for pc users who want to export to an excel file with relative ease. upload your measured readings onto the x-rite website(just need to register). you can then download the uploaded files and choose the file type as needed --- On Sun, 4/3/11, Lew Schwartz <lew1716@...> wrote:

Flatbed scanners can be used, but the spectros are a major advantage if you do much of this. I use the DataColor Spyder 3 Print. I'm not sure what all the pros and cons of the competitors are. I do like the ability to print 21-step test strips, with the gradients above the patches so I can see the ramp, and have them fit as a single strip across a letter size piece of paper. Even though the DataColor unit does now have strip reading, I do it manually -- takes all of one minute. The unit I use has text output that I open in Excel for graphing -- very nice and, again, rather necessary in my view. Paul www.PaulRoark.com > [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Its a CxF file (an XML format) containing a lot of data not needed for this purpose. If you use a recent version of Excel, there's a page on Keith Cooper's site - http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/bw_printing/bw_print_colormunki.html - that covers using the ColorMunki with QTR, and includes a link for an Excel file that is supposed to make it easier. I don't know whether it works, as I don't use Excel. Did a little research today. CxF (Color Exchange Format) is an open source file format for the exchange of color information between CxF i/o compatible apps. Although it uses tags internally like xml, it does not appear to be a sub or superset of xml. Therefore, I wouldn't expect any Microsoft product to be doing io in this format any time soon. The format was developed by X-Rite (surprise, surprise). As far as I can tell, no other software publishers have jumped on the CxF bandwagon, open source freebie or not. www.colorexchangeformat.com is a web site containing all the open source docs and white papers explaining the tech side of things. I called X-Rite tech support to find out if their software bundle's Windows version had been rev'd to output this data in another format, but no one returned my call. I note that this is not a conversion issue; it's a matter of outputting in a more standard format, txt would be preferable, but csv, xls, xml would all work just fine imo. As a professional programmer, this does not look like a big deal mod in their app. When a software publisher limits itself to its own internally developed format it's an almost sure sign that they are dreaming of dominating the software end of things in the market place. I also note that my call to get this information I was transferred to the 'Mac Group,' so I infer the original software was written for MacOS and that Windows was an after thought. We'll be waiting a long time for a Windows upgrade that gives output options on our desktops. This is a deal breaker for me. I'll be going the Spyder 3 Print route in the next few days. It is an xml file, using the CxF version 2 doctype. It even validates correctly to the doctype. xml doesn't have sub or supersets. I don't know what support excel currently has - the last version of excel I used (I think 2000, maybe earlier, certainly not more recent) didn't read xml. OpenOffice doesn't support directly reading xml files - it expects you to write an XSLT stylesheet to convert it, and the last time I did that was over twelve years ago ... I'm not going to try to start again. The template may just extract the bits that are wanted from within the CxF document.
