I don't know about the options on a Mac, but with Windows you need to do 
layout in another editor as youi've done. I use Qimage for this, which 
tries to automatically optimise the layout.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
