sun on Epson paper feed

2011-05-12 by MyronG

For what it is worth, I have noticed that error messages about paper being improperly loaded in an Epson 1800 and 3880 are often caused by too much light getting into the sheet-loading slot on the top. I noticed this occurring during times of the day when sunlight came directly into the room and fell on the printer (from above and behind). Ordinary room light does not cause any problem, of course.

I am guessing that the printers use optical sensing to determine whether paper has been loaded. If they use light-beam interrupter systems, very bright light might result in sufficient "spillage" that the "photo eye" continues to receive an empty-slot amount of light.

This does *not* explain the frequent problems I encountered with thick stock --- e.g. canvas --- in the 1800. (The 1900 seems to have fewer reported complaints than the 1800, so Epson may have corrected the design.)
