In general, I don't think you can do better than a 2880 if both color and B&W are the goal. For dedicated B&W the 2200 is still a good machine if it's working well. The MIS UT7 was the variable tone inkset I designed for it. Today for maximum smoothness and longevity of the image, I'd probably go with 100% carbon (Eboni-6) or, if more neutrality was needed, Eboni-4 Plus (see http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Eboni-4-Plus.pdf ), but that would require some work by you to make profiles.
