QTR versus Epson driver

QTR versus Epson driver

2012-01-16 by amothol

Hi,
I have the UT-3D ink installed in an Epson 4000 printer. In the Y position is the LLK ink. I am on a mac with Snow Leopard. All prints were made on Ilford Smooth Gloss at 2880 dpi.

My first approach was to print through the Epson driver with an ICC profile. The sources were "Profiling the UT-3D Inkset on the 2400" and "Embedding Photoshop Curves in ICC'S", both from Paul Roark. The prints came out quite fine in spite of that linearization was not perfect.

My second approach was to print through Quad Tone RIP, in this case the sources were "Building QuadToneRIP (QTR) Profiles with mac's" by Michael Mathers and "QuadTone RIP" by Amadou Diallo. I made three profiles, a neutral K, LK and LLK inks, a warm C and LC inks and a cold with M and LM inks. So far ink partition and linearization looked good.

Now when I compare the prints with the Epson driver with those made with QTR, the QTR prints looks much more grainy. I have tried to mix the neutral, warm and cold profile to make shure that all ink printed and the result was still much more grainy than the prints through Epson driver.

I would prefer to print with QTR because of better controls but something is going wrong and I can't figure out what it is.

3 scans of the prints can be seen here:

I would very much appreciate if someone has an Idea what I could try to fix this.
Matthias
