ethernet to usb conversion

2012-08-22 by cornelis.robert

Does anyone know if I can use some kind of ethernet to usb adapter/hub with QTR?

I have a new Epson 9890 that I cannot place close enough to my workstation to use straight USB. I cannot get the print to connect via Bonjour (long story, basically Epson is telling me Bonjour does not work with this printer even though their documentation says it does - argh!).

So I need some way to connect without direct usb or bonjour. I've heard that there are devices that you connect to the computer via ethernet and then from the device to the printer it is usb. The printer then looks like a usb device to the computer. But I don't understand enough about what networking layer(s) are at play between QTR and this kind of adapter to know if it would look to QTR like a usb connection.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Or some other solution given the limitations stated above?

Thanks!

In case this info is helpful: I used a USB-Ethernet extender for several years (until just a year or two ago) to connect an old Epson 7000 to a late model iMac. QTR worked perfectly. The Mac and QTR saw the 7000 as a USB printer. No special setup was required in my case.

Google "USB ethernet extender" and you should see a selection of these kits.

I use a Trendnet USB printer server. It works fine but mine does not have MAC OS support.

This one appears to support MAC OS but I have no personal experience:

I ended up getting a cheap USB Ethernet extender and it works perfectly! Makes the printer look like a USB device to the rip. This seems a better solution than using Bonjour.
