feature request - qtr-print mask function

feature request - qtr-print mask function

2013-01-31 by David MacAlpine

Greetings,

Thank you for providing QTR-print - it is a fantastic tool and well worth
the purchase price. I would like to suggest a feature for use in making
digital negatives - a mask function.

Typically when using QTR for digital negatives we adjust ink density levels
to identify the minimum levels to 'just' achieve paper white. If we try
to lay down excess ink to really ensure paper white and complete blocking,
it makes linearizing the high tones very difficult (the curve is just too
steep in the initial steps).

It would be nice to have a mask function in QTR-print that would enable one
to specify a border mask of some size (1 inch etc) to surround the image.
This border mask would then lay down excess ink (K or Y) to ensure complete
blocking of the brush strokes and a nice clean borderless print.

The problem is that although we can find the minimum ink levels for paper
white in making our original curves, the levels of pt/pd and sensitizer are
often quite variable in the border region (ie whispy brush strokes)
outside the image. These regions of thin pt/pd and sensitizer are more
sensitive to UV and tend to darken faster then the main image. Hence the
request for the masking function.

Cheers,

Dave

This is a great idea!
