Epson 1400 & thick paper

2013-07-28 by livingwithbugs@...

I've cross-posted this to Digital B&W. I'm setting up an Epson 1400 (one of the refurbished units) with MIS inks and QTR. I'm running QTR in Linux Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Wine). The problem is the printer is generating an error when I try to print on even moderately thick paper such as Arches HP or Innova STNW (300 gsm/315 gsm). Even when the printer grabs the paper the paper feed light goes on and the page is ejected. Thinner paper such as Epson PPP matte works fine so I know the printer is working. As I understand it the Win/Mac printer drivers have an option for selecting thicker paper (is this true?). Does QTR have an option for selecting thicker paper (if it does I can't find it)? Is there a secret mechanical switch on the 1400 to set this option? Does anyone want a very slightly used 1400, cheap???

How cheap?

It just so happens that I am printing with QTR and MIS B&W inks on a
refurbished 1400 today. (Yes guys, I got it working. The K cartridge was
defective. I replaced it, ran twelvty-seven cleaning cycles and now all
nozzles are good.)

I have printed with Arches Hot and Cold Press and three similar thickness
watercolor papers from other companies, all today. Aside from having to push
the paper into the printer a little bit at the outset, I've had no trouble
at all.

I am on a Mac. I also run Linux on a couple of other machines, though I
don't do any printing from those machines.

If I had to guess, I would start by being suspicious of Wine. On its best
day, Wine is iffy. Do you have a Windows box or a Mac you can try the 1400
from? If it works from one of those, the problem is Wine.

*David, thanks for your response. I too suspect Linux and Wine are the
issue. In fact I'm looking into setting up a dedicated Mac printing
station. We'll see...
