Printing without "no color management"

Printing without "no color management"

2013-11-10 by <george.lemasurier@...>

If I print from Photoshop using QTR as the print driver, what exactly is happening if I choose ... ?
Document for color management
Photoshop manages colors for color handling
QTR_RGB_Photo_Paper for the printer profile

What would be the difference if I chose Printer Manages Colors for color handling?

I've adjusted the curves to get neutral prints to my eye, but wondering if this configuration is introducing unnecessary color inks.

Thanks,
G

Hi George,

The bottom line is that it does not work correctly with grayscale printing -- i.e. QTR. You always get
an extra profile conversion that you probably don't want. I think for the example you mention that
you will get the same result both ways. But they both will have a conversion to GenericGrayGamma 2.2.

But in no case does this affect color inks in your print. The curves in QTR wholly determine how the
inks are to be used. All this CM issue does is potentially introduce some tonal change such as
dark or lighter or different shadows. You can correct all this by reediting you file -- but of course
then what you see on screen doesn't match what you see on the print.

You can get away with this and make perfectly good prints but Print-Tool is my answer to making
this work as its supposed to do (and like it used to in Photoshop).

Thanks, Roy ...

I have managed a work around ever since loading up CS5. I just never knew what was going on behind the scenes. Appreciate the info, and now that I know ...

I lean more to the art side than the techie side, so learning new software isn't my favorite. But it sounds like I should check our Print-Tool.

Cheers,

G
