No Curves for R2000 printer

No Curves for R2000 printer

2014-01-05 by Trevor Simpson

I\u2019ve purchased and installed QuadToneRIP v2.7.0.0, seemingly without issue at first. I can open a B&W TIFF file using the QTR interface but the Curve Setup drop-down boxes all state \u2018No curves found for QuadR2000\u2019. I\u2019m running an Epson R2000 on a network connected to a relatively high end PC (i7 2600 processor, 16GB RAM etc) using Windows 7. I\u2019d be grateful for your help.

It looks like there are no curves supplied for the R2000 - its unlikely
anybody has supplied curves for it, as the R2000 doesn't look like a
good match for QTR with the Epson inks. (It is optimised for colour
gamut and (I assume) has only a single active black ink - MK or PK
depending on paper.)
I think it would only really be usable with a custom monochrome inkset
- I don't know if any are available. If someone is using it, maybe they
could provide some guidance?

Thanks for taking the time to answer Mike. I purchased QTR on the basis that it was supposed to do better B&W than the native Epson driver, noting that the R2000 was a printer that QTR supported. I thought it might have worked in part by using a better mix of pigments to produce greys (not being a printing guru, or in fact any sort of guru since the craniotomy). I guess I'll have to take satisfaction from donating $US50 from my pension to product development for other QTR users. Cheers.

The closest thing to the R2000 that I worked up as a B&W printing approach involved the R1800. The same approach appeared to work on the 1900 also. However, there are no pre-made profiles, and the OEM inkset was only supported with a black only (one channel) approach, which in my view micro-banded too much. See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/R1800.htm and links.

With the 1400 I was able to make a decent print using a black only profile in combination with Y, LM, and LC together making a light gray. With the R2000 you could use the colors to make a gray, but it would not be that light. It's also very hard to balance the color inks to get a neutral gray. I don't really recommend it.

The highest quality B&W from a machine like the R2000 would be to run Eboni-6 or one of its variants in the printer. You can see the 1800 implementation of that here: http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Eboni-1800.pdf . Again, however, it's not an OEM inkset approach. You would not be able to print color.

I have a very similar experience and installed the software because it was claimed that it could make a better job of printing on an (admittedly limited) R2000. I have never seen so much black ink on a print - 3 hours later it's still drying in the airing cupboard.
Has anyone actually managed to make it work with an R2000?
Thanks

When qtr loaded for me, the ink slider was full rail to max. That caused my first digital negative to print as a pool of liquid ink.
So if you have not already done do, take the ink slider down from +50 to 0 (midrange)

Thanks Don – that’s exactly what happened to me. I’ll follow your advice.
