problem with color nozzle

2014-02-24 by Bob Cornelis

I am using QTR to print digital negatives on an epson 11880. One of the nozzles (Light Cyan) seems to be permanenty clogged - one of the pattern lines is mostly gone, but the rest of the LC pattern is there. It’s enough to cause problems printing in color but I am wondering if it will cause any problem I should worry about given how I’m using the rip. Here is my file with ink limits, Light cyan is set to 15. I’ve done a couple of tests and to my eye I see no consequence of the clog, at least no visible banding which would be my primary concern. I’ve talked to the epson tech and it looks after all the testing/maint I’ve done that the print head is bad. I replaced it about 6 months ago ($2500!) and they only warranty them for 90 days, so I’m hoping to not have to buy another print head.

I am going to assume from the information in your QTR profile that you are making digital negatives for palladium printing on COT 320 paper. If that is indeed the case you could just set the Level of LC to 1-5 and not worry about the clog. In the K3 ink set LC is a relatively low UV blocker and could easily be eliminated with very little impact on the overall UV blocking of your digital negative.
