Print Stops 3/4 of the way through on 9600

2005-10-06 by john dean

I am having a strange thing happen on my 9600 with QTR. I've used the
current set up hundreds of times with no issues but all of a sudden on
a 40" wide by 24"inch print on a 44"x30" deep canvas, on roll media,
the print goes perfectly for 3/4 of the file then it stops the machine
rolls the paper back to the beginning and it trys to start again. This
happened twice in a row and is becoming costly. I'm running Mac G4
dual with 10.3.9. The QTR is 2.2 version.

I am going to try to reload QTR and try printing it as a sheet. But
I've worked with much much larger work in this same configuration for
a long time with no glitches. Why all of a sudden this occurance?

John, I had the exact problem with my 4000 and QTR, running G5
(panther). It was sporadic, and wasteful. Printed some interesting
images though. Nothing I tried eliminated the problem until my G5
started having hardware issues, I then installed and ran QTR from my
G4 powerbook in order to print, running OS 10.4.2, and I believe with
a QTR upgrade at that time as well. The printing problem
disappeared. I remember running this by Roy, but couldn't figure out
the problem. It was very strange indeed, and expensive... I have no
idea why it suddenly began, and with perhaps three variable changes
in the mix, what in fact 'fixed' it.

Hey John, hope all is going well!

Hmm...I know my client had a misfeeding problem like that on a 4000, but would start at the
beginning...it wouldn't happen all the time, maybe about 5% of the time. Once I installed the
USB patch that behavior went away completely.

I've had this problem sporadically as well, using an Epson 4000 with
OS 10.4.2 (and with earlier versions as well). Roy says it an OS X
USB bug that apparently first showed up in Panther and has not yet
been fixed by Apple. There is a patch on his site you can run to fix
it.

Thanks John,

How are ya? I guess you are looking forward to the trade show coming
up this month. I don't know if I can make it.

Thanks for that patch. Very nice of ya. I'll try it.

Right now I'm trying to do this one print as a sheet rather than using
the roll setting.

You know the only thing I can think of that could be different in my
total set up from what I've been doing is the usual update to the
Panther OS. It is 10.3.9. I don't think I'll be touching Tiger with a
ten foot pole.

When I tried it as a sheet instead of a roll everything went fine.
I'll install that usb patch and check it out again tomorrow.
