Trying to understand how this thing works

Trying to understand how this thing works

2014-06-12 by rabsanito@...

I am sorry. I keep reading how wonderful this QTR is and seen pictures that apparently confirm this. Now. I've tried some time ago to use it following the instructions and the results weren't good at all.
I am sure the one to blame is me, since I am a novice in the printing science, many concepts are very mysterious to me. I am not new to photography and i was a (say) good b&w "wet printer", zone system and all that, but now I am lost, trying to put what I see in my monitor to paper. Maybe someone could lead me through this jungle of messages so I could read what is important and basical and leave what is confusing?

I use an Epson R2880, I calibrate my monitor periodically w/ a Spyder 3 and I own a Spyder 3 Print, I know how to use it (but my QTR experience would indicate that this is not really true :-( )

Thank you in advance

Jorge

A tutorial I put together for a workshop might be useful to you. It's my recommended, simplified approach that works. It is for Windows. For Mac it's a different workflow. I do use the Spyder.

The inkset I was using is a dedicated B&W inkset that is sort of like multiple monotone inksets. The OEM K3 is going to be set up as a single monotone (K, LK and LLK), with toners, but the first thing is to simply understand how to use and partition monotone inks with QTR. If you can get that, the rest easily flows. So, I'd suggest just ignoring the inkset difference and simply look at the structure and workflow that I outline starting at page 11 of http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Eboni-4-Plus.pdf .

Good luck. It's well worth the effort to learn how to use this tool.
