QTR Installation Problems / Feedback on Mac & PC

2014-09-21 by michaeld1@...

Hello Everybody,

I am a new QTR user thankful to all of you for supporting the development of these very useful tools, which I have devoted time in the last week trying to put into practice. Problems with the installation of Mac QTR 2.7.5 are what force me to reach out for help. I chose to try posting here since my experiences may be of potential help to others who are using newer operating systems.

Basics:

I first tried QTR Windows GUI and successfully used printing, calibration, curve creation and linearization with an Epson 7800. I then switched over to Mac to try QTR there for only one practical reason: I couldn’t find a way to do Borderless printing with Windows GUI, it wouldn’t allow it (there must be a margin space,) and I was used to doing that with the Epson print driver through Photoshop. The Mac installation of the “Quad 7800” printer is not going well. In either Print-Tool or Photoshop I can only see 1 paper size (“US Letter” or “item 1”) and the Quadtone RIP and Printer Setting Dialogues are missing, there is only Layout, Paper Handling and Cover Page. I tried many un-install/re-install variations to fix this with only temporary and limited success. Printing with QTR does show some control advantages over ABW for me, so I would like to have it working optimally on both systems.

Details and Specs:

MacBook Pro Retina 15” Late 2013 1TB/16GB

OS X 10.9.4 Mavericks

Bootcamp Windows 8.1

Epson Stylus Pro 7800 Driver 9.17 (Latest) via Direct USB

Epson UC Inks

QuadToneRIP 2.7.5 Mac (Paid)

QTRIP 2.7.5 Windows

Print-Tool 1.1 (Trial - Will Pay if it works)

Adobe CC 2014 and CS6 installed (Although QTR performance should be independent)

What I tried on the mac:

1) After running the 2.7.5 installer I copied the qidf files I created in windows to the “4800-7800-9800-UC” folder in the QuadToneRIP Application folder. I ran the Install7800 command. The Quad7800 printer created had no printer features in Print Settings in Photoshop and had access to only US Letter Paper Size. Print preview showed last used 24 inch roll setting despite what the print setting paper choice in Quad showed. It may be unrelated, but I also couldn’t access my previous ABW settings. I uninstalled the QTR according to instructions and also uninstalled EPSON drivers, finishing the job with EPSON uninstaller.

2) I restarted, repaired permissions, cleaned cache and re-installed the latest EPSON Drivers first and then QTR 2.7.5 again. This time I created a folder on my desktop “QTR_Install” and copied my qidf files and the default profile and command aliases from the profiles folder. I installed print-tool. Now in Print-Tool I could see the QuadtoneRIP and printer features dialogues in page setup. But my profile install procedure this time was my mistake, the curves listed in the pull-down menus were only the supplied default curves and not the custom Canson and Moab curves I created in Windows. Unlike Windows GUI, I did not see an option for browsing to the desired curve and was forced to try another install. I deleted the Quad 7800 printer and copied my qidf files again to the App Profiles folder. Same problem as before, the printer page settings and features are missing/corrupted. When I watch the terminal it does show profile creation and saving of my curves seemingly without error. Full ABW functionality is restored.

QTR installer will not let me try an earlier version and I am stuck not being able to use Quad7800 after many tires on the mac.

Thank You,

Michael Donahue

Are you connected to the printer with anything other than USB? I know that had caused some problems for me in the past.

Look in your HD/library/printers/qtr/quadtone/quad7800 folder to see if your .quad profiles are in there. You might just be able to drag the profiles you made in windows GUI into that folder (not the one with the install script), then run the install script in the applications/quadtonerip/profiles/7800 folder. It should load the .quad files from the folder in /library even if you don't have them in your /profiles in the quad tone rip application folder.

I can check tomorrow when I get up to the studio to see if dropping the .quad like that will allow you to then print with them.

The .qdif is just a designation for the windows side of things (I'm not sure why) but it is just a .txt file as far as osx is concerned (although trying to open it will launch curve view). If you just drag .qdif file to text edit in the doc, or right/control click then open with text edit, it will then open like a normal plain text file. You can then try to rename and save as .txt in the application/qtr/profile/7800 then run the install script.

If it doesn't give you an error and the .quad files are in the folder in /library but it still isn't showing up in the QTR print dialog then I'm not sure what it could be.

I just re-read your original post, and it sounds like you may have not added the printer and QTR driver through Print and Fax in your system preferences.

Here is what I would do: In System Preferences>Print and Fax (it might be Print and Scan now—I am writing this on my 10.6 computer) remove the StylusPro7800 and Quad7800 from the list of installed printers in the left hand side of the window.

Re-add the StylusPro7800 and choose whatever the latest Epson driver is in the Print Using drop down

Then, still in print and fax, add the 7800 again, and this time choose QuadToneRip version 2.7.5 in the "Print Using" drop down option. That should load the printer as Quad7800 with all the paper sizes and allow you to print using your installed your profiles. You might still need to run the install script in applications/QuadToneRip/profiles/4800-7800-9800-UC.

Hope that helps,

Hello Richard,

Thank you very much for these suggestions, they were very helpful in getting me to the next step of figuring out what is preventing the Quad7800 printer from working properly. I tried everything you said and was able to get the Quad 7800 printer back (the one I manually added) with all of the paper sizes and menu functions available.

The only problem now is that there are no curves at all in the curves menus. The QuadtoneRIP printer menu is either looking in the wrong place for the curves or there is a lingering permissions issue. The printer the script creates is still useless.

I watched the terminal carefully this time and noticed the script was having trouble with permissions, some files it couldn't open and it could not successfully save any of the profiles. This was not the case earlier, though, as the Library/Printers/QTR/quadtone/Quad7800 folder is fully populated with quad files from last weekend, both mine and the default. I manually altered permissions on the files and folders in applications and the library and ran the "install7800" command again and this time it did read and write. The printer that the install script creates has no driver assigned and thus no paper, no menus. If I name my manually created printer (great idea) the same as the script does it overwrites it with the useless printer.

I'll get along without borderless printing for now, I decided it isn't critical for what I am doing right now and stick to Windows for printing B&W. with QTR. It would take a lot more time investment to try and trick the printer into fully working outside of knowing if development changes are necessary to have QTR working on OS X 10.9.4

Thank you for taking the time to respond. Once I have gotten consistent results with my profiles I will post them for others to use. PK profiles were very hard to come when I looked for them.
