QTR and Epson R3000 printing speed

QTR and Epson R3000 printing speed

2014-10-01 by mccarvill@...

Roy / Group –

Is high-speed enabled or disabled when we select <Unidirectional / 2880 dpi> for the R3000? I ask because the printer seems to print at high speed, especially compared to the Epson driver using comparable settings. With QTR I get banding top to bottom on regular glossy papers (e.g. Kirkland type) but no banding (and much slower printing) with the Epson driver, and print speed seems to be the cause.

Thanks,

Mark

Mark,

I am using QTR with the R3000 to print digital negatives with Unidirectional/2880 dpi settings. After you select Layout there is a dialog box where you can change these settings.

Hi Sandy,

I already have Unidirectional/2880 dpi selected, but I don't see a <speed > option. I'm using the Windows interface, by the way.

I am printing with the Print Tool with a Mac, but when printing with PS I recall seeing similar dialog boxes.

After you select Print, a second dialog box opens and you are given the opportunity to select one of several Layouts. At this point select QuadTone Rip and another dialog box opens that allows you to set Mode, Curve, Speed, Direction and other advanced options such as type of dither.

I've looked at the Print Tool and its ‘speed’ options appear to be just Unidirectional or Bidirectional. I've only seen the Epson driver offer the option of high speed = off. That’s the option I'm looking for, and it doesn’t appear that QTR offers it. Maybe Roy can shed some light on this.

The speed option should be exactly the same thing as directional selection.
High speed = bi-directional and low speed = uni-directional.
I haven't done a specific test on the R3000 but I'd think the overall speed should
be similar on QTR driver or the Epson driver for the same resolution.
(Epson says 5760x1440 but it's basically still 2880x1440)

The inkjet weaving on top and bottom of paper has to be different I.e. Less
optimum so that's why banding is more likely there.

Thanks, Roy. The Epson driver offers high speed = off, in addition to unidirectional / bidirectional. That’s what I'd love to see in a future version of QTR. In the meantime, if you get a chance, please compare the print speeds on the R3000 (QTR versus Epson @ highest resolution, unidirectional) and I think you'll see Epson (with high speed off) is slower than QTR and smoother throughout (not just top / bottom). That’s what my test showed, but maybe I'm missing something.

Mark,

My digital negatives printed with the QTR Print Tool with the Epson R3000 are as smooth as I have ever made with either QTR or the Epson driver, so I am missing what you are seeing.

On the other hand, there is a problem at the top and bottom of the page in printing with QTR and the Epson R3000 that I have not experienced before with QTR and Epson printers. The result is that I consider the top and bottom 1.5" of a letter size page dead space and limit image size to a maximum height of about 8.5 inches. I have no understanding of the reason for this, but know that several other people who use QTR and the Epson R3000 have experienced it in printing digital negatives on letter size Pictrorico.

Hi Sandy,

What I'm seeing is top to bottom fine horizontal banding but only when using thinner glossy papers. When I use Canson Platine, I don't see the banding, or perhaps it’s obscured by the paper’s texture. (So this limits my paper choice, obviously).

But what I'm *hearing* is the printer speeding back and forth even at unidirectional / 2880, which is what I'm curious about. When I print via the Epson driver, the printer slows to a crawl and there’s no banding on the thinner glossy papers.

By the way, I'm printing using a modified version of UT-14 inks, using all 8 channels for maximum smoothness. I'm very surprised to see any banding, even on the cheaper glossy paper.

Sandy,

I have a friend who has a 3000 and similar issues. Does the same thing happen with larger sheet sizes?

Hi Kerik,

I can not say for certain that there is a problem with sizes larger than Pictorico. My assumption is that there is, and once I realized the bad printing area at the top and bottom of letter size I adjusted image size when printing on larger Pictorico to make sure I printed in the good area.

Another issue, I have recently upgraded to the current version of QTR and to OS 10.9.5, and have not tested the printer since the upgrade.

Clay mentioned this issue to me quite a long time ago, would be interesting to see if he has found a solution when printing with QTR.
