Eboni 6 + OS X + Photoshop CC 2015 : Always use Printer Manages Colors ?

2015-12-19 by kenlee333@...

I've been profiling and printing from a 3880 using Windows 7 as a virtual machine on a Mac for a while, but now that QTR support for current Windows 10 seems uncertain, I thought I'd try running everything from Photoshop on the Mac directly.

On the Mac in Photoshop, when making a profile we choose "Printer Manages Colors" in an effort to disable color management - since the explicit option for that was removed from Photoshop a few versions back.

After making a profile, do we continue to select "Printer Manages Colors" ? Otherwise, we have to choose a paper profile, and in my case none of them are right for the paper I'm using.

Many thanks !!

Hi Ken,

On the Mac, use PrintTool, rather than using the QTR driver through PS, to get around all those color management issues. It works beautifully and has some other useful features as well.

Ken,

The best way I have found to do this is with a spectrophometer (iOne or iOne 2) that will scan in one swipe either a 21 step gray or 21X4 random target. The basic steps, once you have set the ink limits and values for your inkset, are.

1. Print a 21 step or 21X4 random target, with your profile, with no curve. The targets are available in the iOne folder of QTR.

2. Scan the target with the iOne (or iOne 2). This creates an output file of lab values. You do this with one swipe.

3. Drop the output file on the QTR-Linearize-Data program, which will create output for the Linearize command.

4. Insert the Linearize data into your profile.

5. Run the QTR install command for your printer.

I find the use of the iOne for this purpose much easier and faster than the Spyder Print 3 since the Spyder only does one reading of the target at a time.

The iOne is used with the Measure Tool, which does not work with MAC OS above 10.6.8. The iOne 2 works with iProfiler with current MAC systems.

The Eye One tools look very attractive.

In an attempt to mimic the Windows linearize feature, I took measurements with my SpyderPRINT and added them to the bottom of the .QIDF file, like this.

LINEARIZE=".06 .09 .14 .20 .26 .33 .41 .49 .55 .65 .75 .86 .97 1.05 1.19 1.28 1.37 1.46 1.55 1.59 1.64 "

Then I re-ran the install3880 command to regenerate the .QUAD file.

Will this work or have I overlooked something ?

Using the Mac profile on the Mac, my sample print matches what I can make on Windows with the Windows profile. It seems to work fine now.

Ken,

Your LINEARIZE command numbers look like density values? When I generated the LINEARIZE command from the density/lab values .txt files measured with the Spyder 3, and with the iOne, and dropped those files on the QTR-LINEARIAE-DATA program, this is what I got.

Spyder 3
LINEARIZE="93.73 91.66 89 85.55 81.55 77.84 73.61 71.1 66.49 62.4 58.86 57.79 52.2 50.54 42.52 37.76 33.49 29.14 27.1 23 18.95"

iOne
LINEARIZE="94.32 92.11 89.22 85.85 82.05 78.14 74.01 69.7 65.86 62.14 58.29 54.11 50.01 45.69 41.88 37.72 33.67 29.37 25.74 22.08 17.71"

The LINEARIZE is added to the QTR .txt profile, then you run Install, which generates a curve for the .quad file. In a MAC you can record this from the Linux terminal program, as for example.

LINEARIZE = "95.18 92.88 89.91 86.33 82.4 78.64 74.61 70.28 66.42 62.83 59 54.7 50.51 46.11 42.38 38.15 33.96 29.7 26.07 22.3 17.81"
LINEARIZE_CURVE = 0,0 2.97,5 6.81,10 11.44,15 16.52,20 21.38,25 26.59,30 32.18,35 37.17,40 41.81,45 46.76,50 52.32,55 57.74,60 63.42,65 68.24,70 73.71,75 79.13,80 84.63,85 89.32,90 94.2,95 100,100
