Replacement Printer forEpson 3800

Epson 3800 printer dieng(sic), no longer worth putting money into it, printing B&W with Cone Piezo inks, what would be the best replacement, want 17 inch wide printing, there seems few alternatives at this point for non oem ink sets?

Epson 4900. You can get these things for free from people now because there are so many with a channel out but that still work just fine for Piezo.

best,
Walker

In a sense the 4900 could be used but its a whole lot larger physically even
though it has similar printing specs. You've got to know how to deal with moving
inks around if you get a "bad channel" 4900 -- that's both the cart and the profiles.

If I was looking for an old printer I'd be just getting another 3800 or 3880, then
you are dealing with a known entity. The new Epson that basically replaces it
is the P800. QTR driver supports this printer but I don't know about carts. Profiles
ought to be the same.

Ditto on what Roy said if you can find one. I have suggested 3880s for years because they are really the most stable medium-format made.

It’s hard to find these 3880s though, although I see one now on the refurb site this morning. Just fyi on the piezo carts for these. They require OEM chips to be placed under special resetter chips. So keep your old OEM chips. (As many as you can really, sometimes chips wear out.)

Walker

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Replacement Printer forEpson 3800

2016-04-07 by Stefan Christiansen

Hello Walker,

I have a second hand 3880 that waits for me to decide which ink set I will put in to print negatives.
I print every week (maybe not enough) with the Epson inks to avoid settlement and clogs.
Please, should I stop printing before any cartridge runs dry to collect the chips, or can empty cartridges chips do the trick?
Also, is shaking the whole printer something that can be done safely, even turning it upside down!?
I will probably end loading InkThrift CL in it, so will need to flush, right?
Then Piezoflush in the machine would solve storage issues much better.

Thanks for your help.

Stefan Christiansen

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Replacement Printer forEpson 3800

Dear Stefan. You don't want to let the chips run totally empty before placing them in the refillable/resetter cartridges because they could not reset properly. If a chip is low and you place it into the refill cartridge, you can print a few flushing pages for that channel before doing the init-fill it will reset the chip to full and then you can do your init-fill.

More indepth info on this is at our forum over at InkjetMall. That is a more pertinent place for non-QTR related stuff. (inkjetmall dot com / tech)

//

At Cone Editions (and at my various labs that I ran before that too) we put our printers on wire racks that are on wheels. The moderately rickety nature of chrome wire racks keeps the printers moving laterally a bit during the print process. As long as the printers are used a lot than you won’t need to worry about sedimentation.

regards,
Walker

Thank you for the comments, used 3880's hard to find and when you can find one, the prices are dear, new Epson p800 so far has no non-oem ink cart available, I have been slowly coming to the conclusion that for my needs the Epson 4900 is the best printer. I will need to start working out in order to ever move the printer.
