1st post - some help please!

2005-10-30 by earlyman1953

Hi All -

I just purchased an Epson 4800; this morning I downloaded QTR (have
been hearing great things about it).

I used a grayscale .tif image, and accepted all the default settings
in QTR. I printed it on Epson Luster on the 4800 - it came out as a
very dark mess (to put it kindly) No whites, extremely dark, etc.

So, I attempted to print the same image on my 2200 using Epson Matte
and once again all default settings in QTR. The results were very
similar, nearly identical (taking into account the differences in
paper).

Are there some settings which I should start with, instead of the
defaults? I'm pretty sure that I'm doing everything correctly
(although, maybe not :-> ) I'm just a little surprised that the
default settings would be so far off.

Any help you could give to a QTR newbie would be greatly appreciated!

-E

You need to give more details:

Mac or PC

What settings were selected (I'm on a PC so I have no idea what default
settings you refer to).

Hi -

I'm using a P4 w/2GB ram. The default settings are: printing model:
quad 4800, ink limit 0, gamma adj. 0, resolution - 1440 super, speed -
faster, dither algorithm - ordered, premium luster photo paper, PK
black ink, etc.

I have tried adj. the ink limit and gamma adj. sliders; the prints
look identical to the original.

As I said, I tried the same file on my 2200 with matte paper and MK
ink; got almost identical results to the 4800's output.

Being new to QTR as of this morning, I'll ask what I hope isn't a
stupid question: QTR is designed to work with the normal K3 inks in
the 4800, right? I don't have to be using a K7 ink set, am I?

did you select a curve (from the drop down box) that you wanted to
apply; it doesn't look like it to me from what you've written below.
If you don't select a curve you could expect 100% ink limit being
applied, which would give what you described,

E

I assume by P4 you mean a Pentium 4 with windows.

First, I would suggest you read the help files and User Guide (also
accessible from the Help menu item). That might move you forward more
quickly than waiting for responses from list members.

Second, a basic feature (and requirement) of QTR is that one uses Curves to
define how QTR applies ink to the paper for a given printer. You need to
select a printer, the Printing Model and then use the dropdown boxes at the
bottom of the QTRgui window to select a curve (or pair of curves) for the
paper ink combination you are using. For the 2200 there are curves for a
wide range of matte and glossy papers. For the 4800 there appear to be only
curves for a selection of matte papers for the Epson inks.

You don't have to be using a K7 ink set.
