Does anyone successfully create custom curves with a ColorMunki ?

2016-06-29 by ian@...

I have spend 4 sold days trying to create some custom curves with the ColorMunki all wil zero success.

Before i ditch this project altogether, I am reaching out to anyone who succesfully creates curves with the ColorMunki for some help.

Normally, software does not beat me but I have to say on this occassion its getting very close :)

I have seen your related thread on Lula. My capacity to help is limited, as I use an i1 rather than a Munki. The main thing that comes to mind is that it's my understanding that the Munki uses much larger and differently-shaped patches to the i1. If you look at that Northern Light link that Jeff Grant posted on Lula, at the top there are some chevron shaped patches, and Keith Copper wrote "Note the chevron shaped patches along the bottom of the image - this is for the ColorMunki to measure." This is my understanding. As I read the Lula thread, you're using the Munki to read the charts with small patches intended for the i1. If my understanding is correct then I wonder whether some of your problem is measurement error caused this.

Other than that, I have found QTR curves can tend to over-ink some gloss & semi-gloss papers in the deep shadows, and as has been suggest here and on Lula, you may need to correct for that.

Thanks for the reply Brian and yes, I have come to the final conclusion that glossy based paper does appear to over-ink slightly.

I have just received some Epson Hot and Cold press paper so I will be attempting to create a curve for those today. I really like the Print Tool program for QTR, intact I do like the entire workflow but what surprises me is the few curves been made available from others who have created them for different papers.

The over-inking issue does tend to vary with the paper and printer. And it can change over time. For example, apparently Epson Exhibition Fibre has been reformulated recently and now exhibits this kind of issue when previously it didn't, or not as much.

I'd be interested in how you go with measuring with the Munki. I sometimes get asked by people who can't justify an i1 to use with QTR, whether a Munki would do. Supposedly it will, and the Cooper article says so, but I haven't used it myself and I haven't heard directly from someone who has established a successful workflow.

Ian, I've had good success using a ColorMunki to create curves with Matte paper. I'm using Paul Roark's Eboni Variable Tone formulation, and have done it with straight carbon too.

In general, I find that individual readings work better than reading strips. And for strips, the default ColorMunki strip never works. Use 21step_cm_random.tif (from Keith Cooper’s Northlight site) to linearize.

Because I often go a long time between linearizations, I wrote all the steps down for myself. Send me a note off my web site if you want a copy: http://www.robdeloephotography.com
