P7000 Printer Installation Issues

2016-07-03 by brian@...

Photoshop does not seem to recognize my installation of QTR. When I try to print using QTR inside Photoshop (and choose Print Settings... from the menu), I am only seeing Layout, Paper Handling, and Cover Page as the only options and not any to bring up the rest of the QTR dialogue box options (for choosing profiles, etc.).

Some kind of installation issue, perhaps?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Brian

Sounds like it's not connected to QTR driver.
The script name you want is InstallP7000=7900.command - I.e. Printer name
QuadP7000 but use 7900 driver. Curves from p800 would probably be best.
Just put the above script into p800 folder.

I installed qtr for my P7000 (using the p800 drivers - using the InstallP7000=... command - and it works quite well for making prints.

When I try to make a digital negative on Pictorico, however, I get some pretty nasty pizza wheel marks. I can deal with them with I print through Photoshop (by making tweaks to media thickness and other settings), but I don't know if there is a way to make these sorts of tweaks from within the qtr printer driver. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Brian

Can you make the tweaks on the printer? Gap, etc??

Like I said, I can deal with them when I print through PS (and the negatives that come out are really clean), but I wonder whether there is something in the profile I am using for qtr that is causing them and what, if any, tweaks to the settings in the profile can be made to mitigate them.

Thanks,

Brian

Yes, I can set the platen gap (to wider or widest) and I can print unidirectional (from the qtr driver), but I can't set the media thickness, printer line advancement width, and putting delays in the print line timing (all of which seem help when printing in photoshop). What I don't know is how to change these parameters in qtr or whether there is a way to do it (a work-around) while in qtr.

Again, the regular black and white prints come out fine; it's just when printing digital negatives when I notice them.

Brian

PS I am at work now, so I can't tell you exactly what settings I am using that are working.

You can do this by creating a custom printer type in the printer.

Quadtone rip does not set these values in the printer but you can do it directly on the printer.

cheers,
Walker

Are you sure these are pizza wheel marks? Pizza wheel marks are caused by the sharp little wheels that guide the media through the smaller 13" and 17" printers. To this point, the larger printers 24" and over, have not used these wheels and do not suffer from pizza wheel marks.

Sandy:

That's a good question. They are vertical bands that appear in prints on Pictorico. They don't show up at all when printing on paper (with qtr or through PS).

When I print through Photoshop, they show up in even-toned (usually lighter) parts of prints (e.g., grayish clouds). They are between 1/16 and 1/8 of an inch thick. When in PS, I have been able to make them disappear when I increase the media thickness setting, set printing to unidirectional (turn high-speed printing off), introduce a delay in printing each pass, and by reducing the paper-feed adjustment.

I am planning on creating a custom paper type that incorporates these settings to see how they work with atr printing a digital negative. I cleared the heads and did a head alignment about two/three weeks ago.

Thanks,

Brian

This is a head alignment issue compounded by the wrong thickness setting and/or platen gap and/or print speed and/or paper feed speed. What you need to do is align your heads using Epson Glossy paper or some other thin paper.

Walker

Walker:

I am not completely done with my diagnostics, but I did go through the head cleaning and alignment and also made a custom paper with settings that matched what I was doing in PS. When I print a digital negative through PS, I get perfect printing with no marks, etc. When I try printing through Print Tool and with a QTR profile, I still get the markings I noted in previous posts. I am now wondering if there is something in the profile that might be causing these marks.

Thanks,

Brian

I do not know what profile you are using so I’m not sure if I can comment correctly but if it is under-inking than it will certainly show issues. I print negs with massive ink overlaps and 6+ shades of gray. I generally see issues around alignment if less than even 5 shades of gray . .

I think you're pointing me in the right direction. Right now, my profile is using only three inks (black, cyan, and yellow - I am just getting started with this, so bear with me) so I will start experimenting with more inks.

Thanks,

Brian

Brian,

Are you making profiles for digital negatives for silver or for an alternative process?

If for an alternative process, there are only three decent UV blockers in the Epson K3 ink set, the PK (or MK), the Y, and the LK. None of the other inks, including the Cyan, block enough UV light to justify including using them.

Sandy:

Right now, I am working on making profiles for platinum printing. Thanks for the suggestion; I'll concentrate on those three colors (in my case, PK, Y, and LK).

Thanks,

Brian
