curves question on a Windows 10 PC

curves question on a Windows 10 PC

2016-09-22 by brucerccampbell@...

Why are the available curves different when you look at the QTR GUI "Curve Setup" window and then the "Curve Creator" - File - Open window.

Is there a way to eliminate some of these curves?

I have looked all over my hard drive and can only find a limited few of these curves.

Based on my experience with Win 7 and short term look at my wife's Win 10, this if my best guess:

The differences you're seeing are probably because the GUI Curve Setup looks at the *.quad files, and the Curve Creator looks at the *.qidf files. As you save a *.qidf file in the Curve Creator it generates the *.quad file that the rip actually uses.

As an aside, I find it very useful to have a shortcut on my Desktop that gets me to the QTR profiles -- both the Profiles (*.qidf files) and QuadTone (*.quad) files. In Win 7 that path is
C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\QuadToneRIP

This folder may be different in Win 10. I was able to search with Windows Explorer and find the hidden files.

In this folder you'll see further folders for the Profiles and QuadTone files. Then they are arranged by printer model.

Hope this helps.

Paul

Paul and anyone using Windows 10 and Quad Tone RIP

Well I search a lot more with no success. On Curve Creator-Open - Open Ink Descriptor---- it allows me to look anywhere on my PC. as well as look in Quad Tone Rip folder. I looked in The Quad Tone RIP folder under bin, Epson 3800 (my printer type), Profiles, Quad Tone -Quad 3800. Several curve names show up and all are listed all with a .qidf extension BUT not all curves that show up under the main QTR GUI Curve Setup pull down show up. ARRRRGH!!!

I will work on this some more but if anyone has any ideas please send me your thoughts.

I agree with Paul. QTR comes with two sorts of files - ones for editing curves (QTR ink descriptor files or .qidf), and ones for printing (.quad files). They are stored in different subfolders in the QTR programs folder, with the .qidf files being in the Profiles sub-folder and the .quad files in the Quadtone sub-folder. as I understand it, it's the .quad files you see listed in the Curve setup area of QTRGui. Moreover they don't come in complete sets of matching pairs. So there are some .quad files for which there isn't a matching .qidf file, meaning that you can print with that curve but you can't edit it. Most notably in this category are the Piezography curves.

If you want to only show the printers and papers that you use in the QTR Curve setup area, you can move the sub-folders and .quad files that you're not interested in from the Quadtone folder to elsewhere, but you'll need to do so each time you install a new version. And you'll need Admin rights to move them. This is what I do.

That's all true for curves that ship with QTR. For curves that you create yourself using the curve creator, they are stored elsewhere. See this post, but note the comments that there are bugs in curve create in W10:

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/QuadtoneRIP/conversations/messages/13210

In that you can 't even save the edited curve directly to the virtualstore folders. If you want to limit which files show in the curve setup area then you'll also need to move any .quad files that you're not interested in from the virtualstore to elsewhere.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
