P800 vs. 3880 profiles?

P800 vs. 3880 profiles?

2016-10-16 by dkosiur@...

I just recently replaced my dying 3880 printer with a P800. Has any compared QTR profiles for the two printers? Is there a significant difference, at least for glossy papers? Or do I have to make new curves for the P800?

Thanks,

Dave

I've had major issues after going from my 3880 to the P800. Main one was the inability to print to 17 inch wide paper and get a complete image, even though the gui showed everything correctly. The black inks are also different, so older profiles perform differently. I reported this some time ago and received a sort of acknowledgement, but have not seen any new fixes. I haven't checked recently (gave up and just used Epson ABW); maybe there's a new version of QTR. Had been using QRT for many, many years prior :(

Hi Al,
I purchased an Epson P800 a few months back. I have never tried to print the full 17" wide so I cannot help you there. As I am sure you know, you can create your own profiles. I did not want to spend the time doing that either. Instead, I purchased a set of paper specific profiles from Richard Boutwell, and have been very satisfied with them.

Richard is a longtime member of this group. I don't believe that creating profiles is his main job, so he at that time did not have profiles on hand for my paper. Instead he created them for the Moab paper types I use, each in warm, neutral, and cool tones. They have done the job for me. I don not recall at the moment exactly what I paid Richard, but they work fine and it saved me alot of hassle in getting going with my P800.

I am sure he will see this post or you can look him up and contact him if you like. Just an idea.

Bruce,
Thanks for your reply. Actually, Richard was the one who responded to me earlier. He acknowledged the issues and indicated that he might try to work with Roy on a fix. I've been busy and check in only infrequently to see if there has been any progress.

BTW, my favorite profile was one Roy introduced for the 4900. It's called "Purge K" - only uses the PK or MK cartridge (basically, black only), and produces a very fascinating result, quite special to me, anyway :) However, it did not transfer over to the P800, even though the inks are similar, unlike with the 3880.

Ok, I belong to several groups. Was not paying attention that this was even the QTR group (QTR = Black & White). I responded about profiles for color using the Epson RIP. Sorry.

I have always been satisfied with the QTR Black & White results I get with the slider adjustments within QTR. Then again I use OEM inks, NOT dedicated B&W ink sets......

Good luck.
