New user Ep2200 with K7 inks

2005-11-09 by reederimages

Just got my K7 inks for my 2200 and have an issue.

I can get a 21 step wedge to print just fine. However, when I print
an image, the blacks are very muted e.g. the dMax is way too high.
Any ideas?

I'm using QTR RIP with the latest paper profiles, 2880 dpi, Ordered
dither and ink limit and gamma unchanged. I even tried it on
HanPhotoRag with the same milk toast results. Image is set to Gray
Gamma 2.2 profile.

Hi Milt,

I'm not sure I understand -- i.e what do you mean by "muted" but dMax too high?
The one thing that is important is to use the dpi
that is specified in the profile name. Most for NK7 are 2880 but one is 1440.

Bill Atkinson calls it "smokey". My blacks have a very low Dmax and
hence look smokey. I am using Epson Enhanced Matte paper at 2880 dpi.
I've tried downloading your latest edition with the profiles and it
made a slight improvement but not enough. The sample prints that Cone
editions sent out (e.g. paper samples) are much blacker than what I'm
getting.

Milt,

If you want to find out if it is the inkset or your workflow that is
the problem, do the following - Set up a blank 5"x7" canvas in
Photoshop and fill it with total back. This should read 100% when you
read it with the eyedropper tool, in a greyscale 8 bit space, gg 2.2.

Now if you print this swatch out and it gives you a good max density
your inks are ok. At that point you need to evaluate how you have your
file set up OR how you have QTR and the curves for it set up.

Does QTR run in Win XP Pro x64?
