Epson Has Been Hacked Apparently

Hmmm...I'm dubious. Here's what Jon Cone had to say recently in his latest newsletter on this topic:

"If you're wondering if a solution for the SureColor P6000-P9000 is at hand - we are sorry to say that the chips/carts currently being sold into USA are not stable (in our direct experience) and may physically damage your printer's motherboard and printhead control boards. We've blown up two printers already at great expense. Things were running smoothly and then blamo! If these chips were stable - we would be selling them. We realize others are selling these chips right now in USA. So, please be prepared if you are considering them. Our experience has been painful and it is not something that we would wish on our customers. While we are not always the first to offer chip solutions, ours are most definitely the most stable! For people in South East Asia who have refillable cartridges available for their un-locked printers, we have verified that QuadtoneRIP works and we are building a set of Piezography curves for these printers."

While it would be great if finally we have the option to consider 3rd party carts for the Pxxxx printers, I'd be very cautious at this point.

As the person who did the blowing up of the printers, I can confirm.

It has to do with the head control board. Put the chips (one time ones available currently out there) into a P7000 and the head control board will disable the printer entirely (including for epson OEM chips if you try to revert back). The printer will simply not finish it’s boot sequence. As always we’re working on the solution.

P800 is solved btw. (Instruction at website)

Best,
Walker

Yea no kidding. That's super scary. I thought they just resolved something by not resetting chips but replacing them each time on the 700 ml carts when they ran dry. If they are going to be blowing people's main boards they are in for some real lawsuits soon. Or they could be off shore. At any rate it doesn't seem like a smart strategy for selling ink. They also say the longevity is up to the oem standard and you know that is bull. Every third party color pigment I've seen was way behind oem longevity including the ones mixed into monochrome inks to neutralize them. They are using the cave paint brand name which was a replacement pigment created by Lyson over a decade ago. If Lyson is involved with this they better beware if these chips don't function as advertised.
