EPSON 4900 Quadtone RIP High Sierra European version PRINTING

EPSON 4900 Quadtone RIP High Sierra European version PRINTING

2018-01-10 by kjersti.botnedal@...

Hi,

I am having trouble with paper handling.

When using Piezography we need to print two times on glossy paper, ok. I have no problems with the first print with roll paper. I set it to "no cut" and then tries to reload it the second time. Error message is: Paper Size error Load correct paper size.

Then I tried to print the same file on manual feed. No way I can do this. Error message is: For paper less than 0.8 % mm thickness, insekt from real manual feeder. For thicker paper, press (button) then insert from manual feeder.

I can print roll matte paper - that seems to work ok.

Worked a lot already, on my way to give up. Installed and re-installed two times already.

I am obviously doing something wrong, but what. On the Piezography forum they tell me they have no problems running Quadtone on High Sierra.

On your website, High Sierra is not mentioned on the latest version 2.7.7.

Can this be the problem?

Thanks!

Best regards

Kjersti (OSLO)

On the Piezography forum is maybe was a little unclear that you were trying to print two times. There were many subjects that you were stating in the same thread and problem seemed to be that you were unable to print at all on the 4900 (unable to install even).

So, in responce to the Feed It Twice thing this is where you want to start. This may or may not work on your printer. I will validate this in the lab tomorrow.

Possible Fix:
Put printer in sheet mode.
Put a white letter sheet of paper in the printer.
Bend the top of the sheet of paper towards you and down so the top is touching the top of the printer.
Now pull the top of the paper towards you along the top of the printer about .5”. The bottom of the letter sheet of paper will no longer be on the printer’s input base.
Tape the top of the paper to the printer with some masking tape and keep the sheet in there.
Put your printed sheet of paper into the printer (in sheet mode) behind this letter sheet and queue the gloss print.
Hit the down arrow and the printer should load the paper and print.
There is still a sensor on the print-head itself that you need to get around. Either turn sheet size sensor off on the printer (you can do this from the printer menu) or make sure you have 4 inches of white space on the leading end of the sheet of paper. Tape a leader onto the sheet if need be.

All the best,
Walker

Yes, you are right, a bit unclear on the Piezography Forum. Point is, I coudn´t print at all. Reason: I finally discovered that I had ticked the wrong box on how to handle Roll paper. I ticked Roll (no cut), not Roll Feed (no cut) - you have to options on the K7 version. When I ticked Roll Feed (no cut) problem was solved. Printer and mac communicated again.

Back to the initial problem. How to print 2 times?

With roll paper it´s not possible. As I mentioned in my previous mail, error message is that I use wrong paper size, which is bull. I use correct paper size, but printer will not print on top of another picture.

Manual feed. Sound quite sophisticated your suggestions. Will wait for another instruction when you look at this tomorrow.

In my workflow I only use roll paper, so manual feeding is not an option, really. I only tried it to check if it was possible at all - but no - it wasn´t. Neither roll nor manual feed is possible with glossy paper.

Bottom line is that I can print on matte paper with Quadtone RIP, which limits the usage of Pietzography.

Thanks for looking into this. I am new here, has done a big investment and put in a lot of hours of hard work to have this running. It kind of works with matte paper but not optimal.

Best

Since I haven`t heard from you again, I read this "instruction" carefully one more time and realized you probably didn`t understand my first message.

I can not print anything from sheet mode or manual feed at all. So when you ask me to put in the printed sheet there is no printed sheet in the first place to put in.

In roll mode I can print but only on matte paper, since I am unable to print 2 times. The second time I get the error message: wrong paper size, and printer will not print.

Comprehendable?

I still have the same question - is this about the driver not being compatible with High Sierra or is it the driver not working on Epson 4900 at all?

If it works fine on other peoples Macs with High SIerra and same printer - what on earh do you think is the problem with mine?

K

PS as I said before. I bought this procuct in confidence from Jon Cone and his company. I understand that you have some kind of an understanding about the printer driver. I also understand from their posts that they will take this part themselves, but just for premium customers. Is this why you might not be interested in solving these problems? I paid for the driver as well - you got your money, so please give me some value :)

Hi Kjersti

Sorry to hear you are still having problems.
I do the QTR driver software but Piezography inks company is separate.

I haven't had any troubles nor heard of any with QTR driver and High Sierra. I use High Sierra on my Mac.

An issue with paper feeding -- i.e. roll, sheet, manual -- is usually due to not selecting the correct Paper Feed
in the print dialog. QTR driver is different than Epson driver in that Paper Feed is a selection on the Print
dialog not on the Paper Size selection (Page Setup). This has to agree with where you put the paper and
I think also on the 4900 panel. (I don't have a 4900).

The issue of printing a second pass through the printer can be a problem. With the x900 printer series it
appears that the printer has an optical sensor that thinks the paper has run out or something like that.
There does not seem to be anyway to disable this. Note that you can disable the Check Paper Size on the
front panel but I don't think that affects the Paper Has Run Out problem. This workflow for photo papers
is a Piezo particular method. It worked well with older printers but problems showed up with the x900 series.
From Epson's point of view this is non-standard workflow so not considered a problem (actually a feature).

Piezo people may have things you can try or other alternatives.

I chose to use Epson inks which I find work well on both matte & photo paper without gloss ink on
the papers I like ---- but of course that's a large change from what you have.

Best,
Roy

We did get it working on the x900 (wide formats larger than 17). This post is on community.inkjetmall.com forum for the instructions, and I believe on the 4900 too but I have to go back to notes and the printer itself because I do not believe it was written into the instructions before I arrived.

I’ve been making ink all day in the clean rm. To it in the morning (gotta pull the 49 from storage).
