Print-Tool wishlist

Print-Tool wishlist

2018-02-15 by ctb@...

Hi,

This is a question or rather a wish for Roy.

In my workflow I am using a PiezoDN similar way of sending a positive file from Print-Tool to the printer and have the QTR profile invert it for me. It would be very nice if I could toggle a checkbox to change the Print-Tool canvas to black. This is only possible with the negative setting, but for obvious reasons i can not use that.

Would that be possible? Or even a deluxe option, similar to the negative options:

black background,
black background with small/medium white image border
black background with large white image border.
The last one would be great for my carbon transfer negatives.

Until now I am using a large black file as background and give white borders to my images.

I think the PiezoDN users would appreciate that too...

best,

Kees

Hey Kees.

For now, you can set the page backgrounding in Lightroom print module to black. I haven’t used this option but I just realized it’s there. ;)

To print Linear from Lightroom to QuadtoneRIP select “Other” under Color Management > Profile. Then when the profile selection windows shows up, turn on “Include Display Profiles” and then use the Adobe RGB 1998 profile for printing (perceptual intent). This ensures proper (gamma 2.2) data gets to QuadtoneRIP. If you need to print with an ICC, our upcoming PiezoDN icc profiling app will work with Adobe products (or any other standards compliant software) but for now simply choose Adobe RGB 1998 and SoftProof in Photoshop with the Default-PtPd icc using “Preserve RGB Numbers” turned on to simulate this linear workflow.

Make sure to set 16bit Output, etc.

////

To save all this as a print template in Lightroom first set your Page Setup, then Print Settings (make sure you DON’T save a preset of these settings, the preset menu should be set to default, then set your print settings and hit save). Then go through the right hand side (sizing, profile, etc). Then save the template. Then when you come back to print another neg you simply select the image, the print template, and hit print.

Best,
Walker

Hi Walker,

Thanks for the tip!

I did not know linear printing was possible from lightroom directly. Nice extra, with the black canvas too. But I really would like to see this black canvas option also in Print-Tool. I prefer labor of love apps like Print-Tool, that just does what it needs to do, above overloaded software from companies like adobe who try to make us hostage of their products.

Qimage One

2018-02-16 by Myron Gochnauer

The Windows printing program Qimage has spawned a Windows and Mac program called Qimage One.
It is a simplified, re-thought version of Windows Qimage.
The original Qimage was Windows only, and had/has a quirky interface and an expanding set of features.

I mention this here because it provides another way of avoiding operating system color management.

NOTABLE FEATURES:

1) Qimage One can be used to print profiling tests (i.e. no hidden profiles applied), and it appears to support QTR'ed printers.

2) It appears to do its own up- or down-rezzing to match the printer, rather than leave it to the printer. Aside from choosing the resolution sent to the printer (360 or 720 for Epson, for example), the user has no options.

3) It does on-the-fly sharpening. You choose a level of sharpening from zero to twenty. There are no further sharpening controls. The help screen describes this as "Deep Focus Sharpening", but does not further describe it. However, that is the name given to the Windows Qimage (Ultimate) sharpening process that is designed to reduce sharpening halos.

4) The interface is mercifully streamlined and intuitive (in comparison with the classic Qimage).

5) It integrates with PS and Lightroom via plugins. It also works with any program that can 'share' an image.

6) It simplifies making multiple prints on a singe or multiple pages. It offers buttons for centering, arranging for minimum cuts, and 'intelligent spacing' (not sure what that is). You can also click and drag the images around the page.

7) Initial cost is $59.95, which gets the program along with support and upgrades for a year. Subsequent years cost $19.95. If you don't pay for a new subscription your old version continues to work (or that is what I would conclude from the website wording and my experience with earlier versions of Qimage for Windows.) There is a two-week demo.

ANOTHER PRINTING ALTERNATIVE FOR MAC: Bluecubit's "ImageNest". It describes itself as "A Postscript Level III RIP for OSX". It is more expensive than Qimage One, and like the original Qimage it seems to be a one-person operation. I purchased it for its up-rezzing and on-the-fly sharpening several years ago. It has had technical problems numerous times over the years, and fixes often take months to appear. The current version (V4 - v1302) works well with macOS 10.13.3.
